Is 18 months out too soon to buy my dress?? I don't want to get alterations until closer to the date, but when is it appropriate to buy my dress??

It's a little early...you certainly could order it now and it wouldn't do any harm (you may even feel better having a big decision out the way early!) But I work in bridal, and I generally advise ordering 9-12 months out just to make sure it arrives on time and alterations aren't rushed.

The one thing I would definately advise against is to start looking now if you're not serious about ordering yet, mainly for 2 reasons: first, if you spend months just trying on dresses for fun you're likely to make yourself crazy and quite possibly confused about what you really want. Second, like I said, I work in a bridal salon, and nothing makes me more insane than lugging 20 dresses in and out of a room for a bride who is just coming in to play and is not serious about ordering her dress.

But like I said, if you're anxious to get going and get your gown settled, then go right ahead!!

I say do it now. I got engaged in OCtober and although not getting married until October 2008, I have been hunting for a dress since November cause I knew what I wanted it was just a matter of finding it. I have found a dress I'm in LOVE with and have ordered it. I'm just nto having any alterations done until closer to the date. And I have been one of those people who have gone and tried on 20 dresses and not found the right one at a store -- you don't know until you go and try. I've gotten attitudes from people about how early it was and all that happened was they did not get my business. I found a place where they were lovely and found the dress of my dreams and they got the business. Look at it this way: if you shell the money out for it now and you know that it is THE DRESS you will want on your day, it is one less thing you will have to do in the crazy months before your wedding.

I got engaged last september and I already have my dress!! I'm not getting married till sept 2008!

I knew I wanted pink and saw alot of styles I liked so when i saw what i wanted I had to have it. I thought about it before I got it but I purchased it incase I could not get pink again in the same style.

I must admit everyone tells me to stop looking and I cant help myself to look at other dresses but nothing comes close to the one I picked so I'm glad I got it early

I bought my dress last August.

Way before I was even able to book Disney, even though we had made up our minds.

I'm going back in early August to get what few alterations I need done, which is really only a bustle and the clasp on the halter moved a few inches down to fit around my neck properly.

Thanks guys. :) I have found the dress I want...lets see if you agree..

A) When I just saw a picture of it I cried
B) It looks like something a princess would wear
C) It is the exact style I have wanted since I was a little girls
D) Its super cheap (so IF for SOME reason I change my mind it won't be a huge loss lol)
and
E) I am already having DREAMS about this dress!! lol

I have already looked at at least 20-30 different dresses, but this is the one that when I saw it I said "thats it" and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind. So thank you all for making me feel a little less "crazy" for shopping so early! lol

That dress is gorgeous! I say buy it, if it made you cry imagine how everyone else is going to react when they see you in it.:goodvibes

Beautiful dress! Just make sure you try it on before you buy. The picture I originally fell in love did not look right on me so I went out and found a new perfect dress -- similar style but different. Then once you put it on you will know if it is THE DRESS or not and if it is THE DRESS, then get it while you can in case they discontinue it or something before your wedding date! There's nothing worse than finding the perfect dress and then not being able to get it -- happened to a friend of mine and the poor girl was crushed. I take it you don't want your fiance to see you in your dress before the wedding? I took mine shopping with me which is apparently very rare. Most bridal salons thought he was my gay guy pal. They'd always treat him like he was and then I'd have to explain to them he was the groom and they would all get so flustered. It was sooooo funny! That is a beautiful dress though and if it's perfect for yout hen I say get it cause there is no such thing as too soon for the dress of your dreams!

OMG you better get that dress, I love it, It is making me second guess my dress lol! Who is the designer?

LoL Lynn...you crack me up:rotfl2: It is Alfred Angelo. Diane actually posted the website for it a few days back and I found it within minutes! lol..it was like a train hit me when I saw the picture. I KNEW I was going to wear this dress. (Thanks Diane!!!) here's the link: http://stores.ebay.com/Buy-Direct-Bridals

Sooo....I just bought it! It was under $300 WITH shipping! Yay! :cool1:

The sweet part of it is that my Nana (grandmother on my dad's side), whom I am extremely close to, is on Hospice and will 99% not make it to see me get married. So I emailed her the pictures of the dress for "approval" before I bought it and when she saw it she said "You will look like a princess"....so of course I cried lol, and wanted the dress even MORE! And she insisted on buying it for me! So it makes me so so happy, and her so so happy, for her to be involved somehow in helping me pick my dress, that she knows what I will look like the day I get married (she has waited forever for me to get married and absolutely loves DF), and she was able to contribute by buying it for me. So its all just so sweet...

Anyhow...I got it!! The pics are above. Thanks you guys for supporting my crazy antics to buy it 18 months out! lol And now I have an appt at Davids Bridal tomorrow that I really don't need, but my MOH is going too so we will just look at bridesmaid dresses and accessories!:thumbsup2

So I went to David's Bridal today. I was SO nervous I would try on a dress in a different style than the one I got and like it better....but it didn't happen!! I told the lady I already bought my dress, but I was just checking the fit of the style and which veils would go with it (we were also picking our bridesmaid dresses, so it wasn't a total waste of her time..she was cool with it). I looked around the store for an hour, only found 3 dresses that even caught my eye, and while one of them fit like a dream and looked wonderful, I still walked away 100% sure the dress I bought already is the perfect one for me. I'm so happy. It just confirms that its "the one". I couldn't find one better in a store with over 100 styles. NOW my only concern is that its a 12, and while I THOUGHT I was a 12, I'm more between a 8 and 10. Can it be altered down?? It has a lot of beading on the bodice. Here's another pic...
