I'm going to buy APs and was wondering if I should buy a park hopper and upgrade or just go ahead and buy the AP? Is there an advantage either way?

If you buy the AP will you be blocked on any of the days you were going to use the Park Hopper?

so no advantage? If I buy PH on say May 25th and upgrade on May 28th - the following year I'd be blocked on May 25th-28th?

Buy a 3 day or more parkhopper first, use the MM entry and then upgrade to the AP! :thumbsup2

It depends which AP you buy that will determine your block out days. I purchased the premium AP which doesn't have any block out days.

We went with the premium because not only did it not have block out days but the discounts on food and merchandise and accommodation meant that the card paid for itself in our one two week trip.

If you do have block out days with the AP you are buying and its a time you are going and you are not really interested in the discounts for that trip then getting the park hoppers first would be a good idea.

I don't think you understood what skiing was asking.

YOu need to check the blockout dates for the pass you're getting (if Premium, there are no blockout dates) to make sure you won't be buying an AP before those dates in your trip.

If there are no blockout dates to worry about, then upgrading early in your trip gets you the discounts earlier in your trip. If you have to wait, that's all you miss.

Your pass will be good from the date you first used the ticket (that you upgrade from) through that same date the following year. So you get what's actually 366 days of use, or 367 if it's a leap year. :)

I'm not positive about this but with 3+ day parkhoppers you typically get a Magic Morning/Early Entry day and when you buy an AP they don't include MM.

If staying at a Disney hotel then you would still get Magic Mornings/Early Entry if you have an AP as you show your hotel room key for entry (along with the AP). So I am not sure if the OP is staying at a Disney hotel or a non Disney hotel.
