We are booked on the Greek Isles Cruise in July 2021 leaving from Rome. When should I book a hotel? Can I book this early? Any property recommendations?

Are you planning a stay in Rome before the trip?? If so, I'd try my best to stay in the tourist areas. I can't remember the name of the hotel we stayed at when we were there. We spent 4 days in Rome and it was barely enough, especially with jet lag.

I'd make sure anything you book is fully refundable. Both in case of price adjustments and in case of having to cancel the cruise.

Definitely arriving early.

We were originally doing the 12 night med (this summer) with a week in Rome beforehand. With COVID, we've moved to the 11 night in 2021 and carried our week forward also. I booked our AirBnB the same day as the cruise (which was opening day), so...15 months out? -Ish? Not sure how many are in your party, but we're a party of 5 and the cost of hotels was insane for a week in central Rome. Even moving to next year, we're under 2K to be in a 3BR, 3BA fully apportioned apartment that is 3 blocks from the Villa Borghese and less than a mile from the Colosseum. Our AirBnB is refundable up to 30 days prior and we moved with no fees. Something to consider

For most hotels, airlines, and other attractions etc it's often not possible to make reservations more than 11 months in advance, to avoid confusion about the year. But usually 9-10 months in advance everything should be open and have a reasonable price. My experience is that when you book immediately when it's open you can get higher prices than when you wait a few more months.

We've stayed in the Bernini Bristol several times. The first time it was the hotel that ABD used in their Viva Italia trip. We've since been back to Rome on different (non-ABD) trips and stayed there as well.

We spent 5 nights in Rome before our last minute med cruise last year. I booked our Air BnB only like a month in advance and it was fine...things were booked up and I would have liked more selection, but it worked fine. We chose to stay in Trastevre as recommended by several friends/family. We were so glad we did. It’s very walkable to all the sites but not smack in the middle of the tourism. And the food in that area was the best.

I agree with those suggesting AirBnB. I would also suggest HomeAway. Both options will be cheaper than a hotel. We were supposed to do 4 nights in Rome and then 7 day Med Cruise this June, but of course, that has been cancelled. Have not rebooked as yet. Will probably now book for 2022. I also suggest getting a place close to Vatican, Colosseum and Trevi Fountain so you can walk to all of those attractions.

We wanted to use my husband's Marriott points, so only looked within that brand. We ended up staying at the Pantheon Iconic Hotel and absolutely loved it. It was just a few steps away from the Pantheon, but on a quiet street (by Rome's standards). There were tons of great little restaurants nearby and the Piazza Navona was about a five minute walk. The entire area seemed so much quieter and less over run with cheesy tourist shops than some of the other tourist areas we explored. If we return to Rome some day, I'd love to stay there again - but if not that exact hotel I'd definitely stick with that neighborhood.

We loved Hotel Portoghesi last time we were there, by Piazza Navona. It was difficult finding larger rooms for 3 people in the area we wanted to be in (I took my mom and my son, we did not want two rooms that trip, but my son is getting bigger so we needed enough bed space for 3 adult-sized people to be comfortable). The location was outstanding, and since we got triple room on the top level with a private balcony it was wonderful to relax in the evenings and people watch. Pretty reasonable, found it in the Rick Steve's book.

We had a room booked for the end of this month in Rome.
We booked early and made sure it was cancellable, in case a better price came up.
We do this a lot and almost always, we end up with a better deal the closer we get.
But we like to have a room secured, just in case hotels sell-out.

We will be on the cruise with you hopefully in 2021, I will start to look again in a few months.
We like the Trastevre area.
