When to book car rental?

We will be staying off site for the first time in March and we will need to rent a car. I have never done this before so I was wondering when should I book the car? Is it something I should be looking at this far out or closer to our arrival date? Also, is there a car rental company that people have had bad experiences with that we should avoid?

You want to book as soon as you know your dates and you are okay with the price. I booked my original October car back in February. I changed it once in April, but since then my price has just gone up ($150 to over $300). Make sure that when you book it you can cancel with no penalty and check often

Thank you for the info. I'm looking online at prices and a car rental place by the name of sixt seems to be the cheapest. I have never heard of them? Does anyone have any experience with them?

Car rental companies can be hit or miss. Good at one airport and bad at another for the same company. But regardless of which company you uses make sure you do a detailed walk-around of the car when you pick it up. Look for dents and scratches. Take photos of the entire car so they don't try to charge you for damage when you return it. If you see any damage at pick up, point it out to an employee and have them make note of it.

As was said book when you like the price and keep checking. Book directly with the rental company trying to avoid third parties.

Also, check to see if your car insurance covers care rentals. And see if your credit card does as well. Check the details of each so you won't have to buy the rental company's overpriced insurance.

I book as soon as I know my dates and then keep looking for prices to go down. I've booked and modified and cancelled rental cars more times than I can count.

Which reminds me - I need to get mine for late February/early March 2018 booked now that I've got my dates figured out and resort booked.
