When should I book rental car?

I know it used to be the earlier, the better, but I just got some crazy (very HIGH) rates for next October. When should I book? Are there any codes out for that time period yet? I used to have great luck with Avis & their codes, or National with DC, but what's best now?

So far, I've only used a rental car twice, and I've gotten my best rates via Priceline. I specify an MCO location and both times I've gotten onsite companies (Avis and Alamo).
