When reporting a post to a moderator?

I am curious, when you report a post to a moderator how long does it usually take to get a response?

Thanks!

I think it depends on the mod that picks up the report. I have had one answer from one mod, and that was a "spam" thread report. Anything else I have reported, I have not heard back on, and I know at least one thing I reported 2 times, once 2 weeks ago or so, and once this morning.

Depending on what you are reporting, it may or may not be looked into, or it may not be as urgent to the mods as it is to the reporter.

All in all, the mods have a lousy job to do for free, and they do it remarkably well.

I've only ever reported one thing. A brand new DISer had mentioned something they had gotten away with, and he/she was being horribly flamed and utterly humiliated. Plus what he/she had done was wrong and didn't need to be advertised. So I asked that the thread be closed or removed. The response was VERY quick. The moderators/webmasters here do a great job.

I've only ever reported 1 thread to the mods. That 1 was getting really nasty, and it was closed within 2 hours of my report. So I'd say they do a good job.

Wave:

A response, action on the request, may be almost instantaneous (I reported a wildly out of control, all kinds of personal attacks thread about a week ago, closed in 5 minutes) to ignored.

I have thought it good basic courtesy, if not also good business sense, to reply to a poster who has taken both the interest, concern and time to report a post/thread/inquiry to the moderators. When a post is reported, that report is emailed to all the moderators of that particular board, all the webmasters (and I'm not sure about the 'super moderators').

I would think that the reporting poster should be replied back to, with an indication of either 'we dealt with it or it was judged to be fine' and a 'thank you for your concern' by one of the above, whoever chose to deal with it, with a cc to the others in receipt of it, informing them of it being acted on, one way or another.

My experience of late is that I do not (I retract, when I have sent direct to Pete, he has replied me) get a reply back on a 'report to moderator'. I sometimes check back to see if action was taken, sometimes it has, sometimes nothing. If is is really a point of contention with me, and nothing done, I will resend. A few weeks ago, I resent one 3 or 4 times, finally acted on.

So, you just never know, TL.

As for...
....Depending on what you are reporting, it may or may not be looked into, or it may not be as urgent to the mods as it is to the reporter....
I think ANY report to a moderator should be looked in to as well as replied back to the reporting poster, JMO. And yes, a lousy job to do for free, however, basic responsibilities and courtesies go with it. Again, JMO.

I'll let you know if I don't pass out from holding my breath too long.

;)

I almost never get a reply back, but in all cases that I've reported something, it's been taken care of within a couple of hours and usually within 30 minutes.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it.

It has been over 24 hours, more like over 36 hours and still no response. I have to hope that the moderators will take my request into consideration, as I have been a board member for over 4 years and have never reported a post until now and I would really appreciate a response. So mods, if you are reading please let me know one way or another, please. TIA.

TL, you might send a link to Pete at webmaster@wdwinfo.com and see. As I said, I have not received a reply to a report in ages. Responses to, yes, but no replies. And if no response, then just dead air, nothing.

I'd reply to this post but I don't want to break Dan's streak of no replies ;)

Yep because all of the mods do this for a full time job Dan. (Are we now going to be entitled to the 'well when I was a Mod' speech? That always reminded me of my grandparents and the uphill in snow both ways to school.) :D

They should just spend every moment of their free time responding to EVERY one who reports a post. Sometimes multiple people report a post. Sometimes a person reports a post and they're out of line or way off base. If it gets resolved why do people care if they don't get a personal response?

Although I suppose some people spend more time online than others...

Moderators don't always respond individually to a reported post. In case of a really bad post it may be reported by 10 or 20 people and we certainly can't expect a moderator to reply to all of that.
In other cases a moderator may hop on during a break at work and just have time to take care of the problem.
Either way "report to a moderator" is more of a quick way to report a post to a large group, not a communication with a particular individual.
Dan your information is incorrect. Reported posts are not, and have never been sent to the webmasters or the super mods except for certain boards at certain times, usually 1 or 2 boards out of the 35 or so boards.
If you have a specific problem that you feel requires an answer you can email the "contact us" link on the bottom of every page, a moderator on the board in question or a webmaster.
Thanks everyone

Well, maybe they should spend that time replying. Then, they can simply address the actual problem later on that evening. ;)

Oh come on Alex!! If that was the procedure way back when Dan was a mod, then it must remain that way forever! Didn't you know that? ;)

I am really sorry that some people felt the need for a personal attack on Dan when he was kindly replying to my questions. The reason I have inquired again about my report was because I didn't see any resolution to what I sent, I understand folks are busy and this is all volunteer work for the mods, but I saw no resolution and no reply so I had no idea if my request was received or considered.

Alex, thank you for the added information, I will keep that in mind.

I don't understand what you mean by resolution? Did you expect them to remove a post, close a thread, slap somone's hand? There are many ways to deal with a violation or problem, then again maybe the mods didn't feel whatever you reported was a violation or problem. Maybe the powers that be can come up with an automated form letter like AOL does that says something along the lines of "Thanks for reporting a post. We cannot inform you of the disposition because it would violate privacy issues. Just be sure we are looking at your report. Thanks again." whenever someone reports a perceived problem. Then you would know it was received but as for a resolution to the perceived problem, sometimes it is obvious such as the closing of a thread but otherwise I don't think we have a right to know what the mods have or have not done. That information should remain between the mods and the person who posted the problem. At least in my opinion, then again maybe I'm just used to AOL's way of handling violations of TOS.

I think reported post should get a yellow dot, like the black dot.

That way I would know what to read first!

LOL, just kidding around guys, a little humor to lighten up the conversation, I am not flaming Dan or anyone else and I only get on Alex's case in person on chat, as far as he knows.
