When renewing, can you upgrade to premium?

If I purchase the regular Annual Passes and then decide next year, as the kids get older, that the premium ones would be better for us can we upgrade when we renew?

A couple years ago I had APs which had a few months left on them. Disney guest service allowed me to upgrade them to premium passes using the DVC discount for $13 per pass. Much better than paying nearly $40 per water park ticket.

When must I renew my pass (exp 12/8/07)? Before, by the aniversary or is there a grace period after?

I don't think that you are allowed to renew an AP more than 30 days before the expiration. They will ask when you try to do it. You can renew a premium AP if you had a regular before and vice versa.

Rules for upgrading have changed since hbg4 upgraded. Now, no matter when you ask to upgrade, you will pay the entire difference in price between the regular and premium passes. So now it seldom makes financial sense to upgrade late in the pass year.

At renewal time, Disney/DVC will allow you to pay the DVC renewal price for a Premium pass & get a DVC discounted Premium pass even if your current pass is a "plain" annual. You are not "stuck" with the annual pass.

Thanks all! I don't think we would use the water parks or pleasure island in the next 12 months. We have a 1 yo and a 3.5 yo so pleasure island isn't a big option (never been). We have some free passes from the old days for the water parks so if we do decide to hit them in May we can, October might be too cold.

I just wanted to make sure we could upgrade for the renewal price when they came due since the renewal is less. I had no intention of doing the "last few months upgrade at a reduced rate" trick, in fact I've never heard of it until now.

When you renew an AP does the activation start on the renewal date or does the AP still become active on the date you first use it? This is my first year renewing - and I believe when I PURCHASED it, the activation didn't start until the first date I used it!

When you renew, your anniversay date remains the same. For example, if your original AP was activated on 1/28/06, your renewal is effective on 1/28/07 - no matter when you actually do it.

That's why it may be more cost effective to just buy a new AP if your next trip will be several months after the renewal date.
