isn't there a way to "rescue" points that are in jeopardy by depositing them into Interval International

how does that work exactly?

Possibly. This is from the 2006-2007 Vacation Planner:

.....If you deposit accomodations within 60 days of the check-in date of your deposited week, this is considered a "late deposit." If a late deposit is made, an exchange may be confirmed only by calling Member Services 59 or less days from the start of the date you wish to travel.

All deposits are subject to availability.

My understanding is that there has to be availability for a week somewhere in the DVC system (before the points expire) in order for a member to make this kind of deposit. Anyone who is looking to "extend" the life of their points in this manner should call MS to see what options may be available.
