When OK is not OK

I think there is an easy way to settle this debate. The group here who thinks the OK sign still means just OK should walk around various places flashing this sign to various strangers and see what happens. Then report back on the findings.
I bet you come November and December, THOUSANDS of people will be flashing this sign monthly if not weekly... sometimes in response to the actions of a minority.

How many basketball players and fans have you seen make this sign after a made 3-pointer? Is that still fine, or is that now derogatory also? If it's OK (pun intended), then context matters.

If context doesnt matter, then will you criticize everyone you see celebrating after a made 3?

Why make ANY gesture on the girl's shoulder? Just place your hand there with all fingers pointing down, or better yet, keep your hands off the guests.

Five months after the fact, Universal was able to determine which employee was portraying Gnu at a certain time on a certain day in March?

Racists gonna race.

I can’t believe people are purposely muddying things. Actually, no, I can.

Yep, that's very clearly what I'm talking about. But then again you've leveled that slur against me openly before.

There's definitely no room on a discussion board to say, hey, until this news story this topic hasn't been raised where I am. It's certainly beyond gauche to continue to "muddy" the issue and discuss the fact that it seems curious the issue hasn't been raised in an arena where it seems it logically should, being as it checks the boxes on many fronts -- frequent, open usage; racial diversity; lots of legal folk, etc. Nope, none of it could possibly indicate anything but racist.

I went to the suggested website. You are welcome to do the same. No misunderstanding. It shows the “ok” sign. Not upside down, not sideways. And besides it’s been said here more than once that it’s not upside down.
So you didn't google, then. Good to know you're not interested in educating yourself. :thumbsup2

I have seen no sports players and fans make this symbol as a gesture of acknowledgement.
An upside down OK type signal does not have the same meaning as the upright version any more than putting your middle finger in the air means the same as using your pointer.
I'm having a hard time understanding how some are not getting this.

@RedAngie- time cards and schedules?

I don't watch basketball or any sport really so I don't know anything about how the okay sign is used there. I have never seen players or fans make that sign after scoring 3 or any other point amount, since I don't ever see points being scored at all.

If you go to google images and type in "basketball 3 pointer sign," you'll see many images of this hand sign. It is in fact used in basketball by minorities. I had never seen it used either in reference to basketball, which is why I googled it.

OK, so that is exactly why I suggested the doubters should go flash this sign at various locations and report back. Obviously the hypothesis should be that at a basketball game this should go over okay.

I had no idea about upside down ok symbol meaning anything. However, looking at this picture, it definitely looks deliberately done...and apparently a lot of people know what it means. It's pretty sad someone would make a hate symbol on a child at an amusement park....especially someone dressed as a character, who interacts with families. That's really sad.

What are you talking about?

I didn’t quote you, I didn’t reference you, I didn’t call you out in ANY way, shape, or form.

Maybe you have a guilty conscience?

The overwhelming usage of the “okay” hand gesture today is still its traditional purpose as a gesture signifying assent or approval. As a result, someone who uses the symbol cannot be assumed to be using the symbol in either a trolling or, especially, white supremacist context unless other contextual evidence exists to support the contention. Since 2017, many people have been falsely accused of being racist or white supremacist for using the “okay” gesture in its traditional and innocuous sense.

Because of the traditional meaning of the “okay” hand gesture, as well as other usages unrelated to white supremacy, particular care must be taken not to jump to conclusions about the intent behind someone who has used the gesture.

It’s not about not getting it. It’s the fact that in the picture from universal, he is doing it upside down which is ALSO used in a kid’s game. Sounds like his intentions were not the game, so not debating him being fired.

If you look on the numerous sites talking about this they are NOT referring to it being upside down, sideways or cross ways. They picture it and discuss it as an actual “ok” sign.
