When not using your camera

for more than a couple of days (perhaps even a couple of weeks) is it recommended to remove the lens from the body, or is it OK to keep the lens attached?

We'll be doing a lot of traveling next year (non-sightseeing, in a car) and it's possible I won't be taking many pictures for weeks at a time (I hope not, but it's possible), and was just wondering what the safest (or most recommended) way of transporting my camera would be - with the lens still attached to the body, or packed away separately (and with a lens cover on the body).
I will be using a camera bag of course, but I was just wondering about the best procedure for the actual gear.

Thanks.

Personally, I leave lenses attached to my camera at all times...whether it's sitting for a few days, or a few weeks. You could store the body of the camera with the body cap on rather than a lens, I suppose - I don't see it making any difference as long as the camera is in a camera bag and not being used. The only thing I wouldn't do is ever leave a DSLR without a lens OR cap on.

I have a roller bag for my equipment and the only way I can fit everything is if I keep the longest lens I have attached to one of the bodies. It's fine. :)

My cameras that are in use always have lenses attached. My old film N80 is stored with a lens attached- I haven't used it in a few years. My N8008 has a cap on the body, no lens. I don't know if its recommended to remove them for long periods of storage or not.

Leaving the lens on is fine. If your going to not use the camera for an extended period of time you should probably remove the battery. I would be more worried about that than the lens.

Thanks once again everyone for great responses. Looks like I'll be just fine with keeping the lens on the camera.

Also, thank Handicap18 for the heads up about the battery. It probably wouldn't even have crossed my mind, but it does make a lot of sense if I won't be using my camera for a while.
