Yes, port excursions (booked through DCL), spa, adult dining -- it won't be charged until you are onboard.

Correct. If you cancel later, you might avoid the charge if they are able to fill your spot. To guarantee avoiding a charge, the cancellation policy is 3 days prior to the sail date (not the date of the port adventure, which could be a few days later still).

In my experience They don't actuslly charge your account until the excursion is over. So the charges appear throughout the cruise. As to cancellation we have cancelled people from exvursions the day before due to sickness and hsve never been charged. And we have changed excursions from one to another without a problem. But if you just didn't show up or changed your mind at last minute I'm sure you would be charged.

On the other hand, it's nice to get it out of the way.

There's no perfect way; on Royal you pay at the time which is weird but you don't have a big bill at the end of the trip. ON Disney you pay onboard and have a big bill but you're not paying early.

Not until you get onboard, it will show on your account the day of your excursion
