When is an AP worthwhile?

Currently we have a FD package booked (from a bounceback) for Aug. 2012 for 8 days. We are now thinking we also want to do a 4 day trip in Dec. 2012 When is it worth it to give up the FD and just buy and AP? We would probably still want a dining plan for the Aug. trip but not the Dec. trip. I am having a hard time figuring out which will be better because I don't know what type of room rate/discount we would be able to get.
There is 2 adults and a 8yo if that matters.

You can buy the AP and still keep free dining. Just take whatever ticket it is that you bought with the free dining package and upgrade them to an AP. If you booked the package before a ticket price increase (usually happens sometime between June and August), use the tickets and upgrade them. You will be given credit for the then-gate price of the tickets you have to apply against the cost of the AP.

Generally it's considered financially sensible to buy an AP if you would do 10 days park hopper or 12 days without. (APs are automatically park hoppers by definition.)

Like the previous poster said, you don't have to give up Free Dining. Whatever tickets you got with your FD package in August can be upgraded to APs while you are there. You will just have to pay the difference. Just make sure you upgrade them before you use up all the days. I suggest going INto the park on Day 1 of your trip and head straight to Guest Relations to make the upgrade.

You should be able to get a good room-only AP discount in December. They are generally 5-10% more off than the general public discount.
