Hello all
just trying to understand this whole Gratuities situation
First a small cultural lesson
Here in a Australia you can go to any resturant and have a fantastic meal, ask for the bill, pay the bill and then walk out, no tips no nothing, perfectly normal, prefectly acceptable, I do it all the time
in general i only tip when im drunk, which isnt very often
sure if you want to tip you can, but it isnt demanded or even asked for
of course there would be a few exceptions to this rule somewhere in Australia that i have visited/eaten at yet (which is most of the country
)
So my question is
when they automaticaly add gratuities to my bill as is common in America
does the waiter even get those funds ?
how do I as a tourist not familiar with the American system of tipping know if my tip is being deposited into the waiters pocket ?
for all i know the waiter might only see $5 of a $15 tip with the house keeping the other $10
if any at all
Im not knocking your system
and of course i realise i can hand my tip directly to the waiter in some/most cases
but how can I know what happens to my Tip ? be it automatic or not ?
why dont resturants just up the price of their food with the tip factored in and stop confusing us culturaly different tourist ?
im interested to see everyone else thoughts on this subject
