when does school start

Here in Massachusettes we start school (at least in our town ) Sept 8, we ended school June 20.
My Inlaws say most other states start school at the beginning of AUG . is this true?

we only had 2 days called off this year b.c it was to cold, if anything there was only 1 snow day.

I'm in South Carolina and schools are starting the second week of August and are ending the third week of May.

North Carolina is on pretty much the same scedule as South Carolina.

Schools in Virginia Beach, Va, always start the day after Labor Day. We usually get out around the third Thursday in June.

For the first time ever, our district is starting before Labor Day (Aug. 31) and we get out the first week of June.

our schools start the wed after labor day... but i'm counting on the rest of the country starting earlier so that our week of 8/30 to 9/6 is not crowded at wdw

Here in East Tennessee, most of the schools start around the first full week of August. They vary by a week or so from District to District. In fact, I have two kids in city schools and one in county, and they are always off by a week. I believe the younger ones start 8/9 this year and the older sometime the week prior.

We finish up either the first week in June or the last of May. We also get a one week break in the Fall. It was around the end of October, but they changed it last year to be the week of Columbus Day.

The Fall break week is not common to all of the local school systems. Ours started it a few years ago when they were trying to go to year-round school. Last year they tried to change it to two weeks, but that was highly objected to as well. I wish they'd just do it. Some of the schools near us are doing it and it seems to be great.

In the DC area, the public schools in Northern VA begin the day after Labor Day, the DC schools also begin the week of Labor Day, but many of the public schools in the MD suburbs begin the week of Aug. 23 or Aug. 30. Some of the private schools in all three begin prior to Labor Day.

Here in southeast Michigan (Redford) we start Aug. 25 this year and get out June 8

In Jacksonville FL, school starts August 9th. This holds true for most of FL - staring the 1st week or early of the 2nd week of August. We do this to have school end BEFORE Memorial Day.

Also, the first semester ends the Friday before the Winter Break so the kids will not have to worry about coming back from a long break to shortly have to cram & take end of semester tests, this makes so much sense to me & wish this was the way it was way back when I was in school.

My county (Cherokee, metro Atlanta) will start this year Aug. 9 and get out Friday of Memorial Day weekend, with a full week off for Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas, a week's break in February (Presidents's Week), and a week in April for Spring Break. This is a brand new schedule for us.

For the next school year, we begin school on August 1 and add an additional week in September off (which, coincidentally, is our next trip to WDW!!).
