When does it officially become borrowing?

I've been doing this long enough to know this but need to ask anyway.

When I book a home resort in 2013 at 11 months using banked 2013 and 2014 points for a trip in 2014, am I actually borrowing? In the past I've booked at 11 months and MS says I'm borrowing from next year...........

Or does it become borrowing if I need to dip into 2015 points to vacation in 2014? Can someone actually book a trip in 2013 for a 2014 trip using 2015 points?

You have to look at it in terms of Use Years...not calendar years.

If you are using points from 2013 and 2014 USE YEARS for a trip in the '14 UY, there is no borrowing. You're using banked and current points.

If there were points from the 2015 Use Year being used for a trip in the '14 UY, then they would be borrowed.

yes. use year tells you nothing at all about your booking window. you can book 11 months out based on your home resort - even if you are only using borrowed pts from your 2015 UY.

If the trip takes place before your Use Year starts, that is borrowing.

Take a trip in June 2013 with points from a September 2013 Use Year, that is borrowing.

UY does matter. Like pp pointed out, taking a trip in June 2013 using September 2013 points, would be borrowing.

What doesn't matter is when you book. What matters is when your trip is. As far as how your points are used.

So the fact that you're booking the trip in 2013, for a 2014 vacation, is irrelevant. If you have 2014 points to use for that trip within that UY, then you don't need to borrow. If you're out of 2014 points, then you would have to borrow 2015 points.

Booking windows are always 11 months out for a home resort.

Here's an example too. I have a trip booked in February 2014. My UY is April. Even though it's calendar year 2014, I had to borrow some points from my April 2014 UY to complete that booking. When I booked that trip is irrelevant. Does that makes sense? I'm terrible at explaining things. LOL I don't even know why I chimed in here to be honest. I'm gonna go have some more coffee.
