release the fares and take reservations for Easter travel (late March)?

I have some tickets I (probably) won't be able to use in October. Assuming I have to cancel, I'd like to rebook for March right away.

Does anyone have experience with this? If I cancel before March reservations open, what happens?

An educated guess would be soon after 10/15.
historically - 10/18/02 released fares from 3/9-4/4/03
10/20/03 released fare from 3/7/04-4/2/04

If I cancel before March reservations open, what happens?

If it was booked on line, the funds will just be held as a credit. You use your same confirmation number to access the credit. The website is pretty user friendly. When the payment screen appears for your new tickets, they give you an option to "apply ticketless travel funds" Before they allowed you to modify reservation, I used to cancel and rebook when there was lower fare available. I think generally though, the funds must be used with 12 months of original PURCHASE date (not flight date!)
