When do you stop giving treats on Halloween?

I usually stop giving out Halloween treats (and turn off the front lights, close the drapes, plus turn off the pumpkin light) at around 9 p.m., or a bit earlier, depending on the number of kids trick or treating.

When do you close up, and why?

We have a town ordinance tht dictates Trick or Treting takes place between 6 and 8 pm. I usually leave the lights on until 8:30 assuming I still have candy.

Town ordinance here too. This year Trick or Treat is Thursday, October 28, from 5PM to 7PM. :sad2:

City ordnance here 6:00-8:00. If I see some kids on the street when I go to turn off the pumpkin I'll wait until they hit my house, I'm on a Culd-du sac.

I turn out the porch light at 9. That's the signal on our street that there is either no more candy or trick or treating should be over.

If I run out of treats or about 8 pm we close up because that is the technically ending time for ToT in our town.

I don't think we have "official" times but "recommended" time is something lik 3 pm - 8 pm for ToT and really by 8 pm, you are lucky if one or two Trick or treaters show up. We have a huge children neighborhood so it's jam packed between 5-7 (the preschoolers usually are the ones that show up at 3 pm but during the week type of thing, hardly anyone is home then since they aren't home from work yet).

Plus at that point, I have to get the kids ready for bed since they usually have school the next day. About the only time they wouldn't have to get up early the next day would be on Friday trick or treat.

When the trick or treaters start being older (like 20s)!

I live at the top of a hill so we just get the local neighbors pretty early. About 9:30 we start getting the "drivers".

I'm in a condo now with incredibly tight security so I doubt I will see any. I'll have some candy just in case some kids in the building come by.

Usually around 9:00 or so-we don't have any set times in our town and that is about when kids are done. If we still have frequent visitors, like last year, we just keep going until the candy is gone or kids stop coming. I don't care how old you are, as long as you are in a costume. We have beer for a few neighbors too :thumbsup2.

We are the same way. I don't mind the older kids at all, but I don't appreciate groups of teenagers with no costumes. That seems to defeat the whole purpose. No beer, but we have a crock pot of hot and spicy mulled wine for the adults.

DH mans the door while I take the kids out. He usually closes up when we get back, usually around 8:30. By that time there's no one around anymore.

I can't believe there are actually ordinances that tell you when you can trick or treat. Do they arrest you if you're out beyond the time?

No ordinances here. I'm usually at a house with friends and we'll be up late (nothing rowdy or anything, just a get-together) so we leave the light on all night, if anyone is still trick-or-treating at 10, then they're free to ring the bell. I think the latest was only 11 or so. It doesn't matter to us.

But, it's up to you to do whatever you want. Your candy, your rules. You can close up shop at 6 if you want :).

And no age limit either. If you're costumed, you are candy-eligible. If you don't want candy, other members of your party your candy.

No ordinance that I'm aware of, but we have always manned the door until 9 or until we run out of candy. Last year, we were in a new subdivision and had more kids than we'd had in 18 yrs combined at our previous house. Given that our mayor has waffled on a decsion (Sat vs Sun), saying that Sun is the day, but people are welcome to go out on Sat, we are prepared for guests both days (have a haunt that will be up and running both days). Once we shut down, we turn off all the outside lights (LR is in the back of the house, so you can't see anyone from the front), and quit answering the door.

Wow some towns close up early! My kids don't even get off the school bus until 4:45-- anyway with halloween being a Sunday this yr I guess we will start with the grandparents in the afternoon, then stay out until about 9 or so.

LOL---maybe they take their candy away from them! It seems nuts--never heard of such nonsense other than on here!
This year we will start around 1 and go until 8-9....I will open the door until about 10pm for trick or treaters- don't care if they are in costume or not...knock on the door and you get candy!

I turn off the lights when the kids who atart coming to the door are taller than me and have facial hair, which usually means about 8-830pm. By that time, all the little ones are home, because they go out early around here.

I usually stop eaither when I run out of candy or when the crowds die down.

ours runs from 3-5 and then 6-8. Most people actually observe the "dinner break". After 8, there is a curfew in effect, and yes, technically, the police can pick them up.

Trick or treat is on Halloween from 4-7 which means that I will turn off the lights and shut the door just after 7. We don't get many people after 6:00. It is typically freezing and/or raining on Halloween...without fail!

It is the unofficial start to winter for me..........
