When do schools start in the south?

In Huntsville, the city schools and the county have different schedules...but it's mostly out in the 3rd or 4th week in May and back in the 1st or 2nd week of August.

Here in middle Tennessee, our private school gets out May 19th. We start back for inservice on July 28, first day of school for students is Aug. 4th.

Miami and Ft Lauderdale schools go back August 8 and Palm Beach goes back August 10.

In coastal southern SC, kids start back 8/8; teachers come back 8/2. I've just become a 225 day employee and will start back 7/11.

In Upstate SC a few districts start on Aug 15 and some others start on Aug 22.

Hey! No Fair! You guys get 2 weeks off more than we do! LOL We will in South Forsyth and get out May 27 and return Aug.8. How'd you get so lucky?

We are starting back a week later this year and getting out a week later. I would rather the kids go back earlier and get out earlier. It makes May trips to WDW easier! I think Forsyth gets more teacher work days and random days off during the school year than Fulton does.

Most schools in West Texas begin the 2nd or 3rd week of August. We went to WDW the week before school started in 2003 and it was not as crowded as when we went in the 2nd week of June last year. I think that if you go in the last week of August or 1st week of September the crowds should be more bearable. You will just have to deal with heat and hurricanes.

My DD4 will turn 5 on the 3rd and will probably be the baby of her kindergarten class!
This year, the kids don't get out until May 26th.

Here in East Tennessee, Blount County (south of Knoxville) usually goes back from August 12th thru August 20th...sometime around there. Sorry I can't be much more help, but I do not have children....I have a boyfriend, dog and a car

Dallas ISD returns August 15. Some of the surrounding districts go back even earlier. There was legislation pending to keep everyone out until after Labor Day, but from what I understand that proposal is dead.

And I am so glad it is! I saw the proposed calendar and Christmas break was one week, there was no fair day, no spring break. I hate going so early, but that calendar stank!!!

Holy cow! Do your kids not get any summer break? I thought Georgia was bad going back the second week of August.

Actually, it isn't that bad. We get two weeks off in October, two weeks at Christmas time, two weeks in Spring, and we are out this year by June 3rd. I really liked the October break. I won't get so much time off teaching in Florida but the drive time to Fort Wilderness will be way less!

I live in South Forsyth also and we do get more days off during the year, including 5 inclement weather days, which I wish they would add to the end of the year if not used instead of spacing them out from Feb. through May. I hate the fact that the kids go back to school so early in August, but Forsyth County school board says they want the kids to be done with the 1st semester by the Christmas break as it's too hard to pick up after the break. My older kids did it for years and did just fine as they always started at the end of August and still got out the 1st week of June (we're originally from Chicago area). Now we can never plan a trip in August because of school. Last year we had a wedding to go to in August in Chicago and had to take the kids out of school because of this. There was no way we were going to miss it either!

Most of Alabama schools start around the 2nd or 3rd week of Aug, depends on what county you live in.

Whoa! When does Pinellas start? I grew up in Palm Harbor and as of 1999, my last year, we were still starting in the last week or so of August.
