When do points get officially taken from use year?

I am working on making two reservations, but for the second one, I will need to borrow points. My question is that if I end up cancelling the first trip (30+ days out), can those current use year points be used in place of the borrowed points for the second trip (and thus the borrowed points will be put back into our next use year as if they were never borrowed to begin with)?

Both banking and borrowing are final transactions. Once you do that they stay in the UY you bank or borrow them in to even if you cancel. If you did cancel the reservation the banked or borrowed points can be used and you would free up current points that could then be banked as long as you were still within your banking window.

And that's why it's important to have a UY that allows you to bank should you cancel.

To answer the question in your thread title ("When do points get officially taken from use year"), if you borrow points to make a reservation, the points are moved to their new UY at that time. If you later cancel a reservation and don't need to borrow points after all, the borrowed points cannot be put back into their original UY but as KAT described, you can move points around so that you free up current UY points and bank those, provided you are still within your banking window.

Thanks all for the answers. I guess I wasn't thinking it all thru because it ultimately works out to be the same in this situation. I can always bank the points from the first reservation if I need to cancel that one, which in essence, would take the place of next years points that I need to borrow to cover the second reservation....if that makes any sense.

As mentioned, if you borrow when making a reservation and then cancel it, those points will remain in the UY of the original reservation. You can just bank the current points and have the borrowed points put into any other reservations you have that are in that UY. But, if your first trip is over and then you cancel, you won't be able to unuse the points...that is, in order to free up the current UY points to bank them, they must still be part of a reservation.
