Honestly they didn't and I think I went out even as a teen. I know some think that is wrong, but we weren't doing it for the candy. We had a ton of fun and tried to entertain the people who answered the doors... they got a kick out of it too
In our town the kind of unspoken rule has always been sixth grade is your last year since in seventh you go to junior high. So around 12 or 13 I guess.

Same rule in my house at least. My sister and I were arguing about how fair it was, so I wanted to get my 330,000 friends opinions about it. We are 31 and 36 having this fight. Ahh sibling rivalry!
I stopped on my own. I think it was 7th grade. 9th grade was the first year DD didn't go. It's very common to see teenagers that are bigger than me trick or treating around here - unfortunately. Usually all they wear is a mask.
Nobody told me to stop but I did on my own probably around 14 or 15. I know I'm in the minority, but it really doesn't bother me to see the older kids out trick or treating as long as they aren't causing trouble or anything. Kids grow up too fast, imo.
We were never told not to trick-or-treat, but I think the last time I went was in 8th grade. When I was a kid we used to put on a Haunted House in the basement of our house. It was a really old spooky house anyway, so it was pretty cool.
I also don't mind "big" kids dressing up. My oldest DS was 14 last year and he went. It's good clean fun (as long as that is what they're doing!) and I agree that kids grow up too fast. Let 'em have fun!
Think it depends on where you live. When I was living in FL everyone went till they were well into high school...sometimes beyond. When we moved to PA I was in 9th grade and that was too old for up here! I was bumbed!
The last time I went was 4th grade. I remember some people going in 5th. None of my friends went beyond that unless they had younger siblings to take, but we did get some goofy teen boys every year at our house. It was considered kind of cool in jr high for the boys to dress up as girls.
My son was too cool last Halloween, as well - 5th grade. He wouldn't even take candy when taking his brother around.
No one ever told me. I just got bored with it and never ate the candy anyway. So I stopped after 7th grade I think. Actually my parents were usually dragging me. Some of my friends still trick-or-treat, but that's in the city, where they get to go at night. Out here in the boonies where I live we have to trick or treat in the daylight. Which I think is dumb.
my kids stopped in like 6th grade. Then in high school they and all their friends started going again. I don't stop them. As long as they actually put on a costume. I hate the older kids who come to my house with no costume that I can tell. They're having fun, so I let them be.
wait we are sposed to stop dressing up and going trick or treating? OMG no one told dw and i, ort our best friends,, we always dress up and accompany the kids, We are the parentsa t hat buy the smoke machine and all the freakish decorations and really go all out for halloween, we are throwing party this year fore dd and her friends.
As long as they are dressed up and say trick or treat, I'll give them candy. It sure beats what bad things they could be doing instead. And it sort of protects the younger kids having the big kids around.
