When did they start allowing flash photography on rides?

Haven't read all the posts, but I just got back from the world on Sat (5/15).
We rode Buzz Lightyear once with a family of 3 infront of us. The mom two cars ahead was turned around the entire time snapping flash pictures of her hubby and kid playing the game. She must have taken 50 pictures - it was annoying beyond belief to play the game with the strobe light of her camera. I yelled something but doubt anybody paid any mind. We rode it 8 times during our trip (one of DS fav rides) so one bad trip isn't so bad.

OHHHH I forgot about that one! Yes, people taking pics of family on the rides, I can understand if you want to get one shot before it starts, or whatever but to capture each "scene" with a flash!!! AHHHHH,lol

I like photos, but c'mon...It's not like every inch of WDW hasn't already been photographed a million and one times already. No matter how good a photo you take, one that is just as good has already been taken and posted onthe internet already. That's one ofthe great things about the internet.
So even if you DO take that great shot, well... so what?

Hoenstly, true professional phtotgraphers don't consider pictures of PotC a legitimate challenge. Sorry, it just isn't. The subject is just WAAAAYYY too common.

Once upon a time folks were MUCH better about repecting all the WDW ruels. they just were. It was such a magical place. I think the fact that it was SO clean and perfect, that folks felt the need to preserve it. Every time the cleanliness slips a little, so does the customer response. Look up chaos theory.

Now all that said, I've always understood that WDW late at night is a differnet beast. If you feel you must take photos on a ride, do it late at night when the rides are (nearly) empty. Make the small courtesy of minimizing the impact of your selfishness. Chances are very good that if you are taking pictures after 11pm, the majority of folks who are on the ride with you have already been on it a number of times.

That said, nobody needs to take 10000 shots of one ride. One or two pictures is more than enough.

Oh, and the same goes for video. Every ride is already available online, many times over.

How exactly is someone taking non-flash pictures going to disturb other guests? If I enjoy taking pictures, I could care less what other people have taken pictures of the same thing. You obviously have no clue what it means to develop a RAW picture either. You cannot find those on the Internet now can you? Also, you are not likely going to find anything bigger than a 2MP resolution shot on the Internet because almost every hosting site shrinks them down. I think I am over your head now though. Do not insult what you do not understand.

Based on your reasoning, every casual golfer should just quit the game because they are never going to be on the PGA. I am a bodybuilder, but I am never going to be Arnold, so I should just stop. I guess you should stop driving your car since you are never going to be on the Indy circuit. Come on now, that is all just plain ridiculous! Just as ridiculous as telling people who like to take pictures that they should not because someone else already has!

Why shouldn't you? :confused3 If you were one of those people who argue, "Nobody complaining, so I can be rude," I'd disagree, but since you specify a situation where no one else is there, go ahead and take flash photos. I might ask, myself, because some museums I've been in have forbidden flash photos for reasons I've never figured out, but I'm fairly certain the rule at Disney is for the benefit of other people on the ride.

It is because the long term effects of the flash can damage the things in the museum, especially paintings. It might not seem like much light, but if even half the people visiting used a flash, the light damage would add up. Try leaving a painting in the sun in FL for about a week and you will know what I mean.

:rolleyes:Wendy3- Not that I need to explain it but I'm going to. Out of respect for WDW??? Seriously? I spent 10 days at 4 deluxe resorts (see my thread about comforter cleanliness on the resort board). I really dont think you want to go into the "respect thing" ,lol. If WDW respected me as a guest, they wouldnt have had food and blood on the comforters on 2 of the 4 deluxe resorts I was at. Proof that all the resorts do NOT change the comforters after each guest stay, gross I know.
Yes I reused my mug but seeing as I stayed Club at 2 of the resorts, I only used it 2 times, so calm down.
If my reusing my mug DID affect other visitor's enjoyment then I wouldn't do it but please don't lecture me about "out of respect to WDW", after what I saw on my last trip.
That just cracks me up,lol.:lmao:

You missed my point entirely, my Disney friend. This is not about disrespecting WDW. This is about picking which rules you want to follow and finding an excuse to disregard the rules you don't want to follow.

That is annoying. If people really feel the need to take that many pictures on a single ride wouldn't a video camera be better?

I think the mug rule is dumb considering how much a single mug costs, but I will follow the rule anyway.

Yes Wendy, I got the point, I will keep things to myself about what I do at Disney. Noone is perfect and I surely don't pretend to be. You said "out of respect for WDW". Really? I do follow the rules except that one when I used it 2 times 3 weeks ago...FLOG ME......;)
This is about photography on rides and using the obnoxious flash. Guess I should have sent that message privately.
Geezzz the disney police have arrived!
Anyways, lets keep to the flash photography subject.......:)

Flash photography on dark rides is a big pet peeve of mine.

In December, while on Pirates, a lady continually used her flash in front of me. I ended up with a migraine.

Migraines aren't the only health problems a person could have. If a person has a seizure disorder, the flashing from the camera can cause a seizure. It's not just comfort you are dealing with when you flash away. It's health.

It is because the long term effects of the flash can damage the things in the museum, especially paintings. It might not seem like much light, but if even half the people visiting used a flash, the light damage would add up. Try leaving a painting in the sun in FL for about a week and you will know what I mean.

Yah, I know that's usually it, but every once in a while it's for an exhibit that's not going to fade (clear glass or steel), and I puzzle over it. Maybe they're concerned about reflections damaging other stuff, I dunno. And maybe they're concerned about how distracting the flash is, or the fact that people who are sensitive to it may be there. People with a seizure disorder or prone to migraines aren't going to expect flashing lights at a museum. Any more than they should have to worry about them on a dark ride. ;)

Creativeamanda-That is what I said earlier, my husband suffers from epileptic seizures and noone knows what triggers them. Even though he is on medication I would hate to finally get him to go on ride and have ignorant people flash their cameras not even thinking how it is affecting the health of others.
Others have mentioned it triggering migraines also. That's an even better reason not to use the flash. Forget it being annoying, it can trigger medical conditions that aren't usually triggered by the ride itself.

I'm the crazy person that yells "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY" on rides when I see it done. lol I've yelled it in both Pirates and the Haunted Mansion. I don't care if I look insane, I'd rather look insane one moment and have the rest of the ride be preserved for me and everyone else.

A perfect example of this was on HM. We were in Madame Leota's room, where she summons the ghosts. Someone took a flash picture in there. This is a prime example of flash photography ruining the effect. In that flash you could see all the lines and other devices hanging the many props around the room. It ruined the effect of the objects floating... and then I yelled NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY. lol That stopped 'em. :)

Oh yea Madame Leota's seance...what draws people to try to take a picture of that, do they think the strings hanging from ceiling won't be visible in the picture.I like when they attempt to photograph the ghost birthday party in the ballroom and it reflects back on them,CLASSIC!....but the best is still the guy photographing Mickey's philharmagic,lol....I couldn't help but laugh because he had already ruined it for everyone. So there was nothing to do but laugh......

Geezzz the disney police have arrived!

Anyone else see the irony here??:lmao:

Yeah, yeah - we all hate it when people use flash photography where they aren't suppose to. I'm with the silent majority here - I'm not gonna let one inconsiderate/obnoxious/oblivious person ruin my ride/day/vacation. It's still WDW, people!

Why wouldn't the thread still be open? I think we have all played pretty nice. There will always be people who keep pushing buttons til they get a rise out of others but that's the beauty of choice. You can ignore the rudeness and stick to the topic....
If it does get closed, it would be due to the lack of any more info or opinions. The majority think it's rude and obnoxious. Will it ruin my trip, no. Will I tell someone to stop? If my husband or son is with me who have medical conditions? Heck yes I will and I will tell them why. I will always look after their wellbeing first. They are my everything!:love::love:

All I know is when we arrive August 16th at Beach Club and then to Wilderness lodge days later, first we will buy our refillable mugs for the 3 of us, because I'm going to be a good girl......:cloud9:
This trip, Im not going to be afraid this time to ask people to calm down on the flash photography on dark rides. I'm bringing my son and his girlfriend and she hasnt been in 10 years so lots for her to see that's new.
I always thought I was in the minority and never wanted to say anything but now I'm going to say it if it gets out of hand to where I'm seeing spots in the dark! :lmao:
I appreciate all the comments and feedback, thanks for a great thread my DIS friends.....
