When did Mickey Ice Cream Bars change?

So not a restaurant question but it's about food. So now a days the Mickey Mouse ice cream bars are Mickey Mouse shaped vanilla ice cream completely covered in chocolate, like a Mickey Klondike bar. Well back when I was just a wee lad, in the 90's, I distinctly remember them being a mix of both vanilla ice cream with chocolate ice cream making the eyes, nose and mouth. I remember the ears being brown too, not sure if the ears were covered or if they were chocolate ice cream and then the back was the Klondike style chocolate.

So my question is, when did they switch to the style they use today?

Not sure when they changed but I remember them being a mix of chocolate and vanilla ice cream too. None of it was dipped in chocolate coating. The ears were chocolate ice cream too. I'd forgotten about that! Thanks for bringing me down memory lane

Are you sure they were sold in the parks? I think I remember something similar available in grocery stores.

I definitely remember the old style and also prefer that to the new style. Don
t get me wrong, I love the new Mickey bars but nostalgia brings me to love the old more

I remember the old bars, too. They were good. Nestle is the producer of the new style mickey bars. I'll throw out a wild guess and say Nestle got the ice cream bar and horrific coffee contracts after they took over sponsorship of The Land pavilion in Epcot, around 1993 or 1994. I could be completely wrong.

I remember those from a trip in '89 and I also remember seeing them at the grocery store some time after that. I like the Mickey klondike bar but I like the old style with the chocolate ice cream ears better.

As my WDW history only dates back to 1994, I can't claim any memory of a different Mickey ice cream bar, but have to say I love the current version. It is a marvel to our whole family that they are so good, as we steer clear of any Nestle products as a rule. Unfortunately Nestle has become synonymous with cheap, bad chocolate-y stuff and civility prevents me from describing what they pass off for coffee. But, those Mickey ice cream bars = YUM.

It looked like that but it was definitely sold in the parks. And like speedo said the ears were chocolate. Now that I see the one from the ice cream man I remember the one in the parks being chocolate ice cream ears. The ice cream man one wasn't as good. The ice cream man also had a chip or dale bar with a red candy nose or something.

I was always sad that both of the ice cream man's bars where never as good as the one from the parks.

Growing up 2 hours away from the parks I was always wishing publix or the ice cream man or anyone would get them.

I also liked the old style much better. I hadn't been to disney since I was a kid in the mid 90's and when I went back a couple years ago I was disappointed in the new ice cream bars. At least they still have the turkey legs!

Actually, there was a few other things I was disappointed about as well, customer service, food preparation, basic maintaince and upkeep on attractions, etc..... But that's a different subject all together.

I am not a fan of the Mickey Premium bars that are sold in the parks. I used to love the Itsakadoozies but they stopped selling them, of course!

I have no experience with the "old school" Mickey head ice cream treats you're speaking of. But my understanding is the current ones were developed after Dove Bars became popular in the 90s, and were based on that concept - premium vanilla ice cream coated in dark chocolate.

Oh yes...PREMIUM ice cream cream covered in chocolate... that is speaking my language. I read somewhere that they are gluten-free, as well. If so, that is a definite plus for those face the challenge of maintaining a GF diet. Of course, one doesn't expect to find gluten in ice cream, but it seems to lurk in the oddest places.

I am just looking fondly at my Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar fridge magnet (yep...lots of Disney stuff in our house!) and wondering where I will have my first one of this vacation! I swear, Iif they sold them at the airport, I would pick up one before I got my luggage.

I do feel bad for those missing an old-style treat, though. I hope you have found a new favorite.

Laughing at the idea of the ice cream in the Mickey bars being "premium". A vanilla ice cream that depends on corn syrup to make it have a good consistency (rather than using, oh, natural butterfat like in REAL premium ice cream) is junk ice cream.

Then again, it's the same with the Dove Bars....

In April I had a CM in Tomorrowland jokingly refuse to sell me one because I asked for an "Ear" bar. He said it offended the "boss mouse" and should be referred to as "premium ice cream bar" instead. I bet he would know the backstory on the change in the ice cream shape... He was pretty passionate.

I remember those! In elementary school we had an ice cream chest you could get tokens for and whenever I got a token I picked a Mickey bar! I also loved the popsicles that were shaped like 3D Disney characters.
