When Did I get Voted Off of Skinny Island #2: Castaway's Land Ho!!!!

Yuck - does anyone else dislike journaling (i.e. writing down everything they eat) as much as I do? I can deal with eating right, eating less, and exercising but despise having to keep a log of everything I eat and tracking either calories or points.

I find it especially frustrating because I cook so many homemade meals and frequently have NO idea how many calories or points are in them.

Yes, I'm complaining and venting. :)

Is there anyway to be on a successful weight loss/exercise program without have to count every single little thing I eat?
I log the items, not the calories. Now I'm a maintainer and a slow loser, but it is what it is. Maybe start there, just write down what you eat. If nothing else, it will increase your awareness. You will see patterns. I eat too many carbs and not enough veggies, for example. I always tell myself I "eat healthy", but that's not what my journal shows...:surfweb:

I was paddling along and doing so well, occasionally picking up a garbled transmission from a place called Skinny Island, once in a while I thought I saw another raft on the horizon, when I started to hear singing...:music:
It was the most beautiful, compelling music I have heard, yet sounded as if I had heard it all before. If you see what I mean.
It drew me in, and I just knew I had to follow the sound of that music. :sail:
Turned my back on the island and started back out to sea. I followed the sound of that music for over five days, getting lost in the fog, searching for source of the music.... :listen:
Then another quiet and disrupted transmission came in on my radio and broke my concentration and I realized there was no music at all, just me, following the same siren song in my head that got me lost on the ocean in the first place. I think it was only routine that kept me on my raft the last five days or I might have jumped right off and back into the water. :sad2:
So, I've turned my back on the siren song yet again. I've redirected my raft and am trying to get something/anything on my crappy radio. :worried:
Is anyone out there????

Okay, that was my funny attempt to admit that I fell off the band wagon this week. I'm ashamaed of myself. I kept up my walking, but my eating was terrible.
BUT, STARTING TODAY, I'M BACK IN THE GAME!!! COUNT ME IN. I WANT TO HAVE BEFORE AND AFTER PICTURES TO POST IN A FEW MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!
Sounds like everyone else is doing great this week. I'll catch up on my reading later today, and maybe try to comment some. Have a great day everyone...

What I hear is the rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow by that Hawaiian guy Israel Kamakawiwo'ole when I see your's and Patrick's posts. Calming, tropical music...ahhhhh.....I'm quite a ways away myself, but have no fear - we're here with you too! :cloud9:

Happy Saturday Everyone!

I had a good workout at the gym yesterday. :thumbsup2

My eating went well until the evening when my husband and kids insisted we go to Dairy Queen on the way to my son's homecoming football game. Well I had already eaten dinner (where they hadn't) so I opted for a small ice cream. My husband got a double cheeseburger meal with fries. Since my oldest daughter works at Dairy Queen they gave my husband what appeared to be triple the normal amount of fries. Then the fries started talking to me saying "eat me eat me I'm soooo good and salty" and I of course had to oblige them.

Next thing I know I ate a bunch of fries along with the ice cream. :scared1: I was already at my calorie limit prior to the fry binge. <sigh>

Oh well.....such is life. On to today...

I'm trying to decide if I will do the gym today or not. My right leg from the knee down is killing me. I don't think it is shin splints but the muscle is really tight and sore. I might just go in and go the weight machines that I didn't do yesterday.

Have a good day everyone! :hippie:

I got a new scale - and it seems to be working out okay. I have lost 3 pounds during this week which I expected because of all the water weight from my big binge weekend! I hope it will keep going that direction until Monday!!

Cool beans on the new scale! :woohoo:

Anyone have a good recomendation for anew pedometer?

I don't use one so I can't help you from personal experience but if you search them out on Amazon.com you can read the various reviews on the different brands from other people who have used them.

Sorry you fell off the band wagon but SO happy you are back in the game. Way to go. We all have our falling off moments and it is so important to not focus on those few minutes of weakness but rather to focus on the successes and our ability to return to our plan after having a challenging day! Way to go!

Passed another test yesterday. :yay: Last night was the senior dinner night for the tennis team and it was a pitchin. Did not eat anything there so I could have dinner at home where I already knew the point value and had figured it for the day. The food at the pitchin looked and smelled yummy but I did not even venture over by the table with the food because I knew that if I even got near it I would have eaten some of it. I know that it is so easy for me to be tempted to dive off my raft if I can get to it easily so I just need to try and stay away from the temtation.

Great job! Woo Hoo! Congratulations on passing another test. :thumbsup2

Well, I'm sure some of you are wondering how jogging went with my hubby this morning...

I'm afraid our pace was a bit faster than it should have been (I REALLY need the music I'm afraid) so about 10 mins into our run I was a huffin' and a puffin' but we were able to slow it down so I could hang on for 10 mins longer.

I had hoped to do 30 mins jogging but 20 was good too...it was about 2 miles so that's something to be content with. We then walked for another 25 mins so I did get my 3 miles done for the day and earned myself 6 exercise points total.

Great job on the exercise. Not so sure I would have the patience to do that with my husband so kudos to you. :lmao: You have done an amazing job with your exercise points for the week! :cool1:

Luckily the power came back on around 8pm and I was able to whip out 5 dozen PBJ cookies (peanut butter jam thumb prints) and I did not eat a single one! The whole house still smells heavenly, I say this is the ultimate wil

This week has been a really good week overall as far as eating and exercising went. I've been at the gym almost every day. Started tracking my food on myfitnesspal.com again and also restarted my blood glucose (BG) checks after meals. I've been doing fasting BG checks every other day, but haven't done the 2 hour after meal checks for several months. I was surprised to see that my numbers have changed a bit since Feb/March when I first found out about the whole diabetes thing.

It sounds like you are doing terrific with the willpower against the cookies! :rotfl: Good job on checking you blood glucose levels.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've managed to journal the past two days but I just dislike it. It is another pain-in-the-behind thing that I need to do everyday and it adds a lot of stress to my life because I have NO idea how to calculate calories, etc. for some of my home cooked meals. As bizarre as this seems, I sometimes eat "worse" when I am dieting because I choose processed foods (vs. homemade meals) because the processed foods have a label that gives me the nutritional information that I need for the journal.

I don't even know where to begin!

DH was with me on the raft, we were going to the Y, yadayadayada.
Something really bad happened and now we need to change Y's or cancel or membership, so we are visiting another one for a week starting Monday.

HOWEVER! I did get DH to GIVE UP SODA!!!! Honestly you have no idea! Also, he is watching what he eats now which is awesome! I can't wait to see him start dropping weight!

Susan – welcome back to the raft. It happens to all of us, listening to that beautiful music off in the distance. Hopefully you are receiving transmissions now.

Marni – what is a pitchin?

Julie – Congratulations on the HUGE bump in exercise points. I’m in awe. I need to get off my rear and get out and move today. My list of “to do’s” is mostly cleaning and it’s supposed to get close to 100 today here (isn’t it supposed to be fall?) but I really need to get in some movement. Maybe I can talk Jim into hitting the Y and swimming some laps in the pool.

Leen – The cookies sound yummy. Way to go on the willpower to resist! Thanks for explaining about the blood sugar stuff. I didn’t realize that you needed to test your blood after you ate. For some reason I just thought diabetics tested before eating, hmm learn something new every day. At least you are getting healthy and notice the changes. Good luck on the service project. Hopefully the power will stay on and you’ll get through those boxes in record time.

Emily – Ohh, that doesn’t sound good. I hope everything is ok. Congrats on DHs giving up soda! That is huge. Good luck finding a new gym.
I took the day off yesterday to get some pre-trip planning items done. Charlotte and I went in for Mani/Pedis, then went shopping and ran errands. It was so great to have a girls day. We got a lot done but I didn’t log my food into SP (actually haven’t done that all week). Here’s my best recollection:

Breakfast: multi grain cheerios w/1% milk and banana
Lunch: 2 steamed BBQ Pork buns and one potsticker
Snack: Fiber one bar
Dinner: ½ Veggie burrito and a handful of chips and salsa
Dessert: LF ice cream and handful of semi-sweet choc chips, popcorn
September 24 DONE
No veggies to speak of, so I better ramp those up today.

Well, check this out: I am going to try to track!!! I know - don't faint!!

B: reduced sugar maple/brown sugar oatmeal w/added cinnamon
1/2 english muffin w/peanut butter
L: Schwans Chicken fajita flatbread melt (200 cal)
string cheese
carrots w/ dip
S: handful of chocolate cranberry nut trail mix
D: Arby's Italian Melt toasted sub (NO FRIES!) part of a Pepsi
S: Instant Mocha coffee drink

SEPT 24 DONE!!

So far today I have had
B: instant coffee/mocha, oatmeal w/cinnamon

Have to have an early lunch - going to coach V-ball for a noon game.
I did make some egg salad!

I'm still liking my new scale. It reads fast and goes to the tenth of a pound. Plus so far, it's going down this week!! Gotta love that!:woohoo:
I need to get back down to where I was at my low. Only about a pound to go. Maybe I'll run around more at the game today during warm-ups!

Have a great day!!:flower3:

Just a quick post....extremely busy.

Hope everyone's weekend is going well.

It's still nice and sunny here on Skinny Island, hope I can be joined by someone soon.

Have a great weekend! And good luck to everyone!

(Oh, and for any football fans out there:

Marni – what is a pitchin?

A pitch-in is were someone brings something to eat or drink to share with everyone else. So you usually get everyone's favorite things to eat all together. Can be quite frightening when you are trying to eat healthy because you can pretty much guarantee that there will be nothing good for you there. And if by chance there is something healthy you have be able to control yourself to just get the healthy stuff and not the yummy stuff. And I don't have that kind of control. :)

Interesting! We have always called that a potluck dinner. :lmao:

Happy Sunday Ladies!

I am having a heck of a time getting my eating under control. Last time it was getting to the gym and exercising that was a struggle for me. This time I fell right back into the exercise pattern easily but am finding that I am permanently hungry and having all kinds of cravings for sweets and carbs. Maybe I just need to give it more time. After all it hasn't even been a week yet.

I did an hour at the gym this morning -- 30 minutes on the treadmill and 30 minutes on the arc trainer burning close to 550 calories in the hour.

Doing fairly well with controlling the "bad" food yesterday UNTIL we started watching a movie and instead of putting the ice cream in a bowl, I ate it right out of the container. Granted it was low fat ice cream, but I probably would have eaten a lot less had I just put it in a bowl.

Doing better today. Just trying to keep busy and stop obsessing about making brownies.

I've caught myself doing that sometimes. Not sure if you've been there or not, but on Sparkpeople there's a tool where you can input all the ingredients of a recipe and how many servings it makes, and it will give you a nutritional profile. The only thing I wish it did was let you input a serving size instead of a # of servings, but at least it lets you get a closer approximation.

Not much to report today. Ate a bunch of junk last night watching football, but have snacked very little today. Hopefully I can make up for it as the week goes on.

Well... I learned something that I probably already knew but had it present itself a little more clearer this week.

Once I slip a little off track, it's soooooo easy to keep going off track.

This past week was BAD. B A D. Bad.

It started with a little bit of a bigger meal last Sunday night. Then fast food lunch with my mom and boys at DS7's school, then dinner out for date night anniversary thingie, then chicken wings Wednesday with my mom, then McD's twice!

UGH!

I am such a momentum eater. Healthy foods w/ controlled portions led to more healthy foods w/ controlled portions. A bite of bad food (Which is fine on WW in small portions) or too much of one, be it healthy or 'bad' food leads to more bad foods and pig outs!

Gotta come up with a new plan of attack. I seem to be able to walk the straight and narrow for about two weeks and then I go off plan way too far. I need to not be as strict for the first two weeks so I'm not rebelling so much, me thinks. 2 lbs a week for 4 weeks is better than -3, -3, + 2.2 + Gosh knows how much tomorrow.

Not giving up! Just revamping my plan!

Hope everyone has a great weigh in tomorrow!! I'll be here with bells on and a gain to report! UGH!

This is me to a tee and exactly what happened this last week. Too much eating out, too many snacks, too much of everything. UGH!
I'm up +2 lbs. this week. BOO! It's also my TOM, so that didn't help, but it was really just lack of control.
But, I'm back in the game. My GOALS for this week, are to record every bite and stay within my points range for the entire week. Keep up my excercising (I did okay with that last week) and make 18 miles this week. Also, get in my water and veggies every day...
I don't have any suggestions to help with this issue, I'm just trying to get back into my GOOD ROUTINES and away from my bad ones.
Hope everyone else has a great weigh-in this AM!

+/- 0 stayed same this week:)

First time I've maintained the lowest weight since I started with y'all for 2 consecutive weeks. For me - a big deal!

Morning all. I have sucked hiney the past 2 weeks. Up 3 pounds and although I know a lot is water weight. Beyond frustrated with myself. A ton going on here with some medical issues with Carsyn and me compensating my feelings of helplessness with food is not going to help.

Sp told myself I need to post here at least 2 times a day. Maybe attend more than one WW meeting a week. I suppose it's like AA meetings, no shame if you need more than one boost a week.

I will post post the weigh in results last week today and this week tom. Then I vow to be caught up...I need it.

I will explain more on Carsyn later. Nothing life threatening, just disappointing because she had a serious surgery 1 1/2 years ago and it is not working like they hoped.

I am sorry for being AWOL. Will be back before lunch! Even with me tracking on WW, I need to track here also. Double the accountability!! :worship:

Well I survived the morning at the gym. I'm still trying to get a grip on the gym traffic patterns. They gave me a flyer that shows their averages of people in the gym by hour every day of the week. Well my experience is that what people are currently doing doesn't match that silly flyer.

I decided that I was going to do my weights on Mondays because it appeared that the gym is usually crowded on Monday mornings and I didn't want to wait for the cardo equipment that I prefer. Well today the cardio equipment was empty and the weights were packed which I haven't seen yet. :confused3

I managed to get all of the weights done and then jumped on the Arc Trainer for 30 minutes even though I wasn't planning on doing so. It was empty today and since I always complain about there being no availability I figured I better grab it while I can.

My goal for this week is to try to get my eating under control. After talking with my chiropractor and doing a lot of research I realized that a lot of the symptoms I am experiencing are due to perimenopause. I was shocked to find out that most women start perimenopause in their mid-to-late thirties and was also shocked to realize what the symptoms of hormonal changes really are! So I'm modifying my diet and starting a round of supplements to see if I can help to eliminate some symptoms.

Have a good day everyone! I haven't started weighing in yet. I'm trying to get on a solid plan first.

Didn't eat too much on Friday 'cuz Malachi had the stomach bug and I didn't want to smell up the house with food when he couldn't eat it. Poor kiddo. He felt good enough Saturday afternoon to play in his football game, but then started feeling crummy again. Not pukey anymore, just really tired. He didn't eat anything all weekend until late last night and then, he just wanted applesauce. Totally not like him - He's a big eater. He slept all day Friday and off and on all day Sunday. Maybe he'll feel better today. He's got his "Hoops 101" class afterschool and then football practice tonight. He seemed in better spirits this morning.

We did have a good weekend other than Malachi just feeling tired. I went to Winston-Salem on Saturday and picked up his new puppy. We surprised him with it after his football game. He was so excited. The puppy is 4 months old and is a Blue Heeler. He's is sooo sweet. His name is Angus. Here's a few pic's of him meeting Malachi for the first time.

I figure that I let myself have one day a week to eat bad for me, but super yummy foods. But, I still have to try and control what I eat the best that I can. So I let myself eat it but try to keep it to smaller portions. I only go into where the food is just to get a few things and then leave that area. I do not hang out by the foods, that would be a really super bad idea for me. It is usually just the taste that I really want anyway and to know that I can still have it, so I let myself have it to get the craving out of my system. Then I can usually be good for the next week. Partly because I know that I will let myself have something again on Saturday. So far that seems to be working for me. I lost 6.5 lbs this week, :yay: not sure how but not going to argue with my scale. With a bigger loss this past week I know I will not see much this next time. That is how it seems to be going with me this time around. Big loss one week and then either nothing or a small gain the next week. But as long as over all it is going down that's all I care about. :)

Okay, I'm doing alright.
Down 3.8 lbs this week! It sounds big, but if you remember, I was up like 5.5 last week. So I still have a ways to go to get down to where I was at my lowest. I'd say 2 pounds. Hopefully I'll see that next week.
New scale is going to work out well.

Tebi - that is such a cute dog!!!

I agree with you Dawn - it's like AA! We need to keep checking in as a reminder and be held accountable. I am going to try to track more again and check in here and post at least every other day. I usually come and read, but don't always post.

My goals for this week are to walk at least three days during lunch. The weather is supposed to be fabulous! I couldn't do it today because I have a staff meeting during the lunch hour most Mondays. But I will be coaching a v-ball practice tonight, so I'll be running around with the girls.
