When can I book on borrowed points?

I have borrowed all my used all my 2005 points and won't be able to borrow 2006 until October of this year. I am planning on taking a trip in January 2006. When can I book this trip? Do I need to wait until October (my use year) or can I book sooner?

You can always book 11 months out at your Home and 7 months out at other resorts. You just need to have the points available when you check-in. So, to stay in Jan '06 you could have called in February to book your Home resort, but need to wait another month to book another property.

Just remember that the borrowing of the points from one UY to another happens at the time of the reservation. When you call, they will move the required number of points from your October '06 to your October '05 UY, and the points will stay in the '05 UY. Even if you have to cancel / reschedule that January trip, the points stay in '05 and must be used no later than 9/30/06.

Your points are borrowed at the time of the reservation, and since you can make that reservation as early as last February, that is when you could have started borrowing. MS tracks points by use year, and even though it looks like they are not in your account yet, they do in fact track them that way.

Points do not "drop" into your account when your use year starts, they are already there. Since a January 2006 trip is in your 2005 use year, you can borrow 2006 for any stay that takes place after 10/01/05.

Just remember - you only need to have the points for the day you check in, you don't need them in the account when you make your reservation. At the time you make your reservation, you indicate if you will be banking or borrowing.

The reservation is made according to the 11 month or 7 month window. So you book according to which booking window applies, not how you will get the points.
