When Blue Jays Attack

There is this cute little baby blue jay that fell out of a tree in our backyard. He's trying so hard to get back to his family, but cannot fly that well. He's tried several times to get over the fence but ends up right back on the ground again.

Against DH wishes I tried to go help it . . .but as soon as I got close the mom started to screech loudly and was getting really close . . so I backed off . . .

I hope the little guy makes it . .

Be careful because blue jays are MEAN! They attack my neighbors cat when it crosses their yard too close to where they have their nest. Poor cat is doing flips trying to avoid getting pecked on the head!

Take an OPEN umbrella with you and keep it close to your head. That will help the mama jay keep her distance while you help the baby back to the nest.

I wouldn't try to get it back to its nest...it could just create one of those situations where the mother just abandons it altogether. At least the fact that the mom is still out there keeping an eye on it is a good sign.

Use a piece of cardboard or paper to pick up the baby bird- don't touch it or sometimes mom won't take it back (not always at this age). Also, the oils in our hands can affect those little newly formed flight feathers.....good luck and the umbrella trick can really work- although you may not have much of an umbrella after the attack...

...and who's to say WE wouldn't attack an aggressor to OUR babies in the same way! Go Mommy bird!
