When are the best rates for flying?

Hi everyone. We don't travel often so I'm not sure when the best time to purchase our flights for our trip to vegas might be. We are about 6 months out from the trip right now. When I first started looking there were flights around $250/$300 for good flight times from our nearby airport. Now everything has gone way up. Will the prices come down to where they were or should we be buying tickets before they go up more?
