Any Fla families here? I am planning a trip to VWL mid May. When do schools get out normally? Will the hurricanes affect this at all?

Not from Florida, but my friend who teaches in Tarpon Springs mentioned that there are not days added to the end. It's my understanding that Florida allowed districts to add on hours, here and there and that's how the bulk of her days were made up.

There are a min number of counting days, the number 180 comes to mind. To count they have to be so long so early release days usually don't count. Most schools have about 5 days or slightly more build in extra just in case or os I'm told. when they need to make up they have several choices including adding days in the summer, going longer on the early release days and saturday school. I'm sure a lot of schools will have to find ways to make up. Not all districts have the same schedule. As a rule, I think most schools in North Florida start early to Mid August (13-17 or so) and get out the Thurs or Fri before Memorial Day. Some offset a week earlier. Spring break is usually not right at Easter and usually occurs in March for our area. About the only time when Spring Break touches Easter is when Easter is in March.

Hi Degli. I just took a look at the Orange County (Orlando area) school calendar and they are running later this year. Last day is May 27. The calendar also shows several "class make-up days" scattered through the calendar and it says that Wednesdays will be full days starting in (I think) February.

my family lives in fl and I am on the phone with my sis now she thinks the first week of june.

Ok, don't think that I'm an anal freak, but I went to the Fla Dept of Education site and looked up all the counties to see when they're getting out. (We're going 5-23 thru 5-26)

Here's what I got:

7 counties get out between May 17-May 19
17 counties get out on May 20
38 counties get out between May 23- May 27

3 get out on June 1
1 on June 2

Dade and Broward counties get out on June 1 for those interested. Hope this helps.

That was a great idea to check that when the schools get out. We are going the same time as you. May 21-May28. Looks like most of the schools will be out already. Hopefully it wont affect the parks too much.

Katie,

Where are you staying at? We decided to try BCV this time b/c we're staying in a studio and the bed/sofa combo is alot easier to deal with with a 6yo and a 3 yo. Also, I think the kids will love Stormalong Bay.

Thanks so much, man that's thorough! I was once told that in Disney attendance can pick up once schoolare out. I don't know how true this is. Seems to make sense. I'm going May 13-21. Hope I miss the crowds.

I think for the better part of your trip, you shouldn't have any problems with attendance. The closer it gets to Memorial Day, the more it picks up.(people-wise) What's helping us too, I think, is the fact that we'll be there Mon night through Thursday morning, thus avoiding weekend crowds.
