And now the house just feels so big and empty.

We had to put our labx down yesterday. Milhouse was such an awesome dog- NO...member of the family. My heart hurts. DH and I are both pretty torn up over it. Poor guy...his hind end simply stopped working. He had been dealing with some spinal/nerve issues for the last 2 years. His hind was weak and he'd lost the ability to always feel when he had to go #2 (sometimes it would just fall out of him if he couldn't feel the "urge"). But he was getting around fine and happy.

While I was away at a horse show, DH called me to tell me that Milhouse couldn't get up. Couldn't walk. Had seemed to have lost all functionality in the hind end. one leg was completely dead, without any sensation. The vet saw him immediately and we tried prednisone, thinking maybe there was inflammation of a nerve somewhere...but the decline in his physical state was rapid. He was in so much pain. Couldn't even lift his head. It broke my heart.

So we helped him across the Rainbow Bridge. 9 1/2 amazing years with that wonderful dog! From the day we found him as a 3 month old puppy, sitting in the middle of the road next to the carcass of his dead mother...

I miss him so much.

The day we brought him home:

And all grown up:

I'm so sorry to hear this, but you did the right thing after giving him such a good life. :(

I am so sorry. We lost our 15 year old friend in April. She too lost ability to use her hind legs. We got a new Lab puppy last month and she looks soooooo much like your dog. We were not sure we were ready but it sorta just happened and we are in love all over again.

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Just know that you did right by him in the end, and probably all of his life.

So very sorry to hear about Milhouse , Jennasis. Sounds like you gave him a wonderful 9 1/2 years of love. And knowing your love of animals, what a wonderful family to have had all those years.'s

You know where all your animals are, all of them......

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I am so very sorry about your family's loss. I was never much of a dog person until we got 2 puppies this past year for our children. I could not imagine my life without them now. They really do become a part of the family.

Beautiful dog! He knew he was loved,& you did what was right for him. RIP Milhouse, you're now on the Rainbow Bridge with all of our other departed DIS pets .

:grouphug:'s to you and your family Jennasis

I'm sorry for your loss. We put down our 15 year old Pitbull, Maggie, back in 2004. She had a stroke, and she couldn't function after that. To this day, I still have pictures of her around the house. It's a sad thing that they can't live as long as we do, but you gave your dog a wonderful life. Try to remember him as someone that lived, not as someone who died. Peace be with you :flower1:

I love Milhouse's head tilt - like he's so eager to see what is going to happen next! His flop ears and square face look like he's got some boxer too.

I am so sorry, Jennasis.

The hardest part about having pets is outliving them . . . :sad1::sad1:

I'm so sorry. I still have the tags from my dog who I put down in 1982; their unconditional love stays with us forever.

Godspeed, Milhouse... (I love that name!)

I'm so sorry for the loss of your special friend.

I'm so sorry for your loss. What a sweet looking boy! We lost our golden when he started having kidney issues. We made it about 3 weeks before adopting a new member because it was too quiet.

I'm sorry for your loss. :'(

It's such a difficult thing to go through!! I lost my Shih-Tzu/Pekinese mix, Bubbles, back in April. She was 15 and I had picked her out when she was 2 weeks old. My heart still aches for her. She also lose use of her back legs.

Stay strong!!

I'm very sorry for your loss. We had to put our 12 year old yellow Lab to sleep this past April. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of him and miss him. The "empty house" feeling is the worst...he's not there to greet me at the door or follow me around the house all day. But, he's out of pain and in a better place now. Hugs to you.
