How's the Rose & Crown? We think we'd like to try to get a table in time for Illuminations, but I wonder how the food will be. DH will be fine, he loves fish and chips. I don't like seafood, so I'm wondering what else you guys liked there.

I am not a fish :fish: eater either.

My selections:
Lamb Barley Soup - traditional Scottish farmhouse soup $4.99
Cottage Pie - ground beef with carrots, topped with mashed potatoes and cheddar cheese, served with green beans $14.99

or maybe you would like...
Chicken Pasty - chicken and fresh vegetable wrapped in a pastry, topped with cream sauce and served with mashed potatotes and green beans $14.99

Guinness Stew - beef stew infused with Guinness Stout, mashed potatoes, and a cheddar cheese cracker $15.99

The English Toffee Dessert was wonderful - the food was blah.

I had made a reservation at Rose and Crown only to see Illuminations. I really didn't think my husband or I would enjoy the food but we have simple tastes and we enjoyed it immensely. In fact it turned out to be my husband's favorite meal. We don't eat red meat so we really had two choices: fish and chips or the chicken pasty. I had a chicken pasty in London last year and didn't care for it but the one at Rose and Crown was pretty tasty and I finished it. My husband loved, loved, loved the Harry Ramsden fish and chips. Turns out Harry Ramsden is like a colonel sanders with some secrets spices in the batter that differentiate his fish from the others out there. I didn't think it was spectacular but the view for illuminations was. Unlike the previous poster, I didn't enjoy the sticky toffee pudding. It was the one thing I was most looking forward to having since enjoying it in London a few times (and the Americanized version at Claim Jumpers) but it was extremely disappointing...may have just been an off night. I say go for it...the waitresses were extremely friendly and the atmosphere was both fun and romantic for us.

they had a prime rib special when we dined there. And their Love Potion drink is yummy!

My favorite thing to get at the Rose and Crown is the Cottage Pie. From what I can remember, it's just beef and carrots topped with mashed potatoes, it is wonderful!! I'm always sad when I clean my dish because then it's all gone. :teeth:

DH and I have enjoyed everything we have eaten at R&C. I highly recommend the Chicken Pasty and the mushroom appetizer.

R & C is a must do for us :thumbsup2
There is a lovely dessert sampler ( about $12.00) to share & decide which will be your favs or downers. DH likes the flight --sampler ( in 2 sizes, guess which size he chooses! ;) )--of brews
We love the fish 'n' chips, but now save them for the less expensive, smaller, but satisfying portions at the Yorkshire shop--right next door--or the R&C pub grub

Usually we begin with the fruit & cheese plate. Check out the chef's selections, good value. DS17 is partial to the chicken pasty or bangers 'n' mash, I love the Guiness stew, DH is more adventurous & mixes it up

Of course you'll get some diverse reviews on R&C( or any restaurant :) ). Personally, we've always had good service & decent food & cheerful service.
FYI, we do visit at slower seasons & eat at 'off' hours. Also, we are pretty laid back

We tried R&C for the first time last summer and we loved it so much we canceled something else and ate there twice.

In fact, we have it planned twice this year!

DH loved the Lamb & Barley soup and I also loved the Potato & Leek soup.

DH loved both the Sheppards pie & Guiness Stew.

I had the Bangors & Mash and it was OUTSTANDING! I had that both times! I'm definately going to have the Bangors & Mash this year too. Talk about tasty!

The kids had the fish & chips & sheppard pie and loved it.

I LOVE the Bangers & Mash!!

I,too, was disappointed in the Sticky Toffee Pudding. I had heard so much good about it on two different boards and it was always recommended to ask for "extra custard". This was nothing to me but a cake covered in a sweet toffee-y sauce. Not good at all. I don't remember what my DD got, but I liked it much better(could have been a chocolate cake???)

OK, you have to like mushrooms in the first place to love it, but let me tell you, the Mushroom Ragout is one of the most outstanding dishes I've ever had. I got it the last time we were there, and everyone at the table who tasted it was RAVING. It's basically mushrooms simmered in heavy cream - it's hard to explain how fantastic this dish is.

It's cream of mushroom soup to the Nth degree - but it's not soup. It's the best stew I have ever eaten - but it's not stew.

My two favorite things to eat at WDW are Mickey Bars, and the Mushroom Ragout - cooked with garlic, shallots, and cream, accented with a fleuron - mmmm.

KC,
Now you have me thinking I have to definately try the mushroom Ragout- I love mushrooms but it didn't sound appealing. You made it sound very tasty!

It's a hidden treasure, as far as I'm concerned. My parents loved it, my sisters loved it - it was so delicious, we found the recipe and made it for Christmas dinner this year. If you go to the 'food porn' thread and do a search for mushroom, it'll take you to pictures of this yummy dish.

The only caveat I'll give you is that it's rich, rich, rich - not that I minded ;) !

DH is British so he always insists on one meal each trip at the R&C. He tries something different each time and has always enjoyed it. I'm very fond of the bangers and mash. The onion gravy is fantastic. And I really like the trifle. DD loves the fish and chips although it tastes a little bland to me.

THE MUSHROOM APPETIZER!!!!!

It's SOOOOOO good!!!! I have an appetizer salad with the Silton dressing to start. Because you can't beat stinky cheese. Then I have the Mushroom Ragout(?) Appetizer for my main. It IS very rich and filling. A main course in itself. Yum. I just made myself hungry thinking about it.

Just back from our second meal at R&C. Love it! We did not even have an ADR this time, just decided last minute we wanted lunch there and had no wait, no problem. :)

I had the fish n chips (though I substituted mashed potatoes) in Nov,, and this time had the cottage pie. YUM! :cloud9: None of us have had anything we did not like there. I want to try the Guinness stew next time.

PS-The guy in front of me asked check in if it was possible to make a reservation a day in advance! :rotfl2: I told him he could do it 180 days out and he was shocked! He wanted a seat during Illuminations the next night. Guess he thought he was being "smart"! ;) :p
