Before I start this I just want to say that I do not do drugs, not because my parents brought me up a certain way or any other reason. I don't do drugs just because I choose not to. I don't need an anti-drug because I don't need drugs. I don't feel I need it to make my day better.
Now here comes the part that will give me a lot of slack. I hate, hate, hate anti-drug commercials because not only do I feel they make many teens uncomfertable, but they are annoying.
Some of them even come off laughable. The ones where kids start doing pot and then one of hte kids takes out the gun and shoots his friend. I've never seen stupid stuff like this happen around my friends who do pot.
Recently a movie called Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle parodied these commericals by having a commerical in the movie with two teen kids getting high and one of them shooting themself saying, "Who cares what I do? I'm on drugs!" Then he shoots himself and a disclaimer comes up and says: MARIJUANA KILLS.
I think Eminem says it really good in a song called "Who Knew." Not only do kids have to start taking responsibility for their actions, but it isn't the media that influences kids. Case in point these anti-drug commercials. I don't think they really reach teenagers and too many who do drugs, come off as laughable. Here is the quote:
"So don't blame me when little Eric jumps off of the terace. You should've been watching him. I guess you aint parents."
If parents don't want kids to do drugs (nearly 100% don't) it becomes a big problem. The old rule of the book is that kids want to rebel against parents. So what happens. The klids see these commercials and respond to them neutrally. Parents have a difficult job, but they need to talk to their kids if they wnat something done and not just hope an "anti-drug" will do so. Even then we have to realize that some kids will do drugs no matter what.
Many teens do drugs, not to becomes addicts, but to experiment. It won't develop into a lifelong habbit. Many who try pot, stay with it their whole life. Their are many people in the world who think marijuana should be legalized. I'm not sure where I stand on this issue.
As you can see I have many tangents to go off upon and sorry if I lost my narrative thread on this.
