What's your opinion of Whispering Canyon Cafe?

I had theskillet, which was pretty good. I loved the cornbread.

My mother had the meatloaf (I think) and liked it alot.

Mom thought it was loud and rambunctious. DD3 and I thought it was great. Entertaining enough for her to tolerate a lengthy meal without too much problem.

I liked it enough that we're going back to WC during out March trip!

Thanks for the quick reply! :thumbsup2

What is the skillet?

I've only had the skillet, and thought it was really good.

The skillet is the reason to go. It is an all you care to eat BBQ feast. It has salad, cornbread, pulled pork, sausage, chicken, brisket, potatoes, beans, slaw. It's outstanding. And the atmosphere is fun too! I make it there every trip!

Ok, so it's all you care to it!

Does everyone in the dinning party have to order the skillet?

No, everyone in the party does not have to order the skillet. They will bring out a skillet according to how many order and then refill as needed. We've had people in our party order the skillet while others ordered ala carte.

We love the atmosphere for the kids. But you asked about the food... nothing special.

We had 3 skillets & have to say that all three of us really enjoyed it,there was more than enough without refills. The mash as i recall was particularly tasty:)
SD:thumbsup2

Found it overrated. DH and I shared the skillet. I don't like cornbread so didn't even try that. I ate a little of the beans, potatos and pulled pork--it was just so-so. I stopped eating because I really wasn't enjoying it. DH ate some of everything, including the ribs/chicken which I never touched, and he was sick all night. The service was terrible--we were there for over 2 hours. We may try breakfast, but we won't be going back for dinner.

I liken it to the 50's Primetime or Sci-Fi...places to go for the atmosphere but not necessarily the outstanding food like the rest of the places. Just my opinion. That doesn't mean the food is bad...far from it. But when it is only 50 paces from Artists Point...you get the idea.

All that being said, we always go there at least once. Fantastic atmosphere, if you are into the antics, break from the MK during the heat of the afternoon, and it gives you a chance to wander around the WL, which is gorgeous!

Have fun!

Loved it here! Good food and lots of fun. Been here a couple of times.

How was the food?

Ok...I would go once for the ambience and atomsphere...Now...the food..

I had the skillet BOTH times we went...It was pretty good IF you like that type of food...

My fiance and son had ribeye...It was horrible...Fat and cooked bad...My daughter had pasta and was nauseous after, and almost got sick on the bus back to the MK.....

I would not count it as a great food place, but, a must see place...Go for lunch, might be better.

We had the skillet, we've had it a few times. It was very tasty.

We've had dinner there three times. Of those three, once (in 2003) was very good, but the others (most recently in 2007) were not so good. Since that 2007 visit, no one has asked to return, so we skipped it last year, and we're not doing it this year.

Both our service and food were sub-par.

We have been once. Won't return. Antics were fun for our 13 year old at the time. He had a steak (enjoyed very much), my wife had the pasta (awful) and I had the skillet (mediocre at best). It was an ok visit for the antics, but to us it was vastly overrated.

We did not care for the food. It was mostly greasy and not very original; just your average ribs, smoked chicken, sausage. There was certainly plenty of food. We thought the service was mediocre. Their jests were fun for a little bit but, everything was so slow, we were really ready to leave after the time we were there. Very noisy. If I had a family filled with little boys, I'd go for sure. But for older folks or couples, it's not inviting and the food isn't good enough to overcome the atmosphere.

Our first time was last Sept and at first my husband was against the place (doesn't like to try new things:confused3 ) but it was the only place left that had an opening and it was our last day well he loved it so much that he said this year we have to go back, we had the skillet also but we had shrimp not sausage and the shrimp was awesome, I would say go and try it and have fun.;) :)

Be concerned when gimmicks and non-food topics are a focal point of restaurants reviews. The skillets we had at lunch here were less than satisfactory. Salt was used heavily to a point of making the food repulsive. Combine this with servers obsessions to cater to tables buying alcoholic drinks and joke-gimmick checklist and you will have an experience to remember...
