My brother and SIL are adopting a 1 year old and I was thinking about getting them a subscription to a baby magazine. DS is 13 so it's been a long time since I read any of them. What's a good one?

The baby magazines I have seen are filled with "fretfull mother" type things. Kinda scary or worrysome. What we found most helpful when we adopted our 2 year old were the "What to Expect..." books like Toddler Years, etc. Much more helpful. Just my opinion.

I personally liked Parents Magazine. I had a subscription for the first couple of years of DS's life and then again when DD came along. I really liked (assume it is still the same) that they have a section for each age group every month, not just babies.

I agree the what to expect books are great but they don't come in the mail every month with new topics, tips, recalls etc.

I probably wouldn't get that gift. Magazines really vary, as do parenting styles...I can't stand the mainstream stuff, it just seems to be advertising and stuff from the AMA. I would appreciate a Mothering magazine subscription, but on the other hand, I never bought myself any, so it just wasn't that important

I *would*, however, get the Dr Sears baby/toddler books, b/c they are excellent.

I like Parenting. They have an early years and a later one, too. I can't tell you why I like it, but I do. Better than Parents, which I also get.

There is, of course, always the Disney Fun Family magazine to consider. There's a lot of kid-friendly recipes and crafts in there. That might be good since the munchkin is 1...

And as far as books, I LOVED the Baby and Toddler 411 books. Written by a doctor and someone else, with lots of useful information.
