So i'm shopping at Disneyshopping.com and looking at holiday houses, well they all seem to have this warning :

WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, or birth defects or other reproductive harm.

What's that all about !??! :confused3

I think it has to do with a very strict set of guidelines that CA has with regards to labeling. I think it is more of a reflection of CA's strict guidelines that the amount of danger you would be in if your purchased it.

Most likely it's due to the little bit of lead found in the extension cords. I ahve that warning on my Geroge Foreman grill. It's not biggie. If you;re worried, just wash your hads after plugging/unplugging them.

I think it's actually in reference to the PVC plastic, that plastic that's soft and pliable and has a significant smell. Many of the Disney character sets and squeeze toys are made from this plastic.

Another warning about PVC, it can erode the finish on your furniture. Don't ever display, or even leave lying around, any toys that contain PVC. They'll leave a mark.

California has different safety guidelines than the rest of the country. We were checking into our hotel in San Diego, and saw the same type of warning signs. We asked at the front desk and their safety guidelines were explained to us (Courtyard by Marriott, a fairly new one).

From gals in CA on another board of mine, essentially it's that CA is so much tougher with their safety warnings. But the effect is that EVERYTHING has that warning, because a manufacturer doesn't want to get caught not labeling something that's maybe potentially harmful. So it's effectively useless as a warning.

I found that warning on my Mickey waffle maker.

If you look around your house at different items I think you'll be surprised to see actually how many items it is one, sheets, comforters, mattress pads, pillows, cushions for chairs, couch cushions, just about everything!

I was looking at a Stitch lamp for my son for Christmas. I found the same warning on the page with the lamp. I called them and the woman said the warning was there because there was lead in the lamp. She couldn't tell me how much lead, or what part of the lamp was lead so I didn't buy it.

I took the warning on the waffle Iron to mean about the non-stick surface...I thought I heard about somthing that make the non-stick surfaces poss cancer causing. But I thought that was on the old type that used to scratch easily :confused3

My prelit Christmas tree had the same warning. I freaked out, my son freaked out and refused to decorate the tree. I contacted the company who said it was related to the light strings.

After California passed a lead free product law - anything that contains lead must show this tag. Local news station did a study with a University on the content on lead with Christmas supplies. If you are worried, check the web for studies on lead content in wire supplies and see the concerns you should be aware of.

We had a thread going about this awhile ago. It is the power cords on electrical appliances and other plug in items. IE: christmas lights and decorations. It is a small amount and if you just wash your hands after handling the power cords you will be fine. The above poster who was questioning the Mickey waffle iron, the nonstick coating is fine, It is a high quality, very hard to scratch off and the warning again applies to the cord, not the coating. If you notice it's just CA warning, not any other state. CA wants to protect themselves from any possible problems that could happen on just about everything they sell in the state. As someone mentioned they have tougher restrictions than all other states and if you actually visit or live there you will see warnings posted EVERYWHERE about EVERYTHING!

Living here in California, we have warnings on everything! Our gas pumps now have 6 individual warning labels, our shopping carts have warning labels, etc. There should be a label warning that you are entering CA! :rotfl:
