Teachers are paid too much!! I'm fed up with teachers and their hefty salaries for only 9 months work! What we need here is a little perspective. If I had my way, I'd pay teachers babysitting wages.

That's right...instead of paying these outrageous taxes, I'd give them $3.00 an hour. And, I'm only going to pay them for 5 hours, not planning time. That would be $15.00 a day. Each parent should pay $15.00 a day for these teachers to baby sit their children. Even if they have more than one child, it's still cheaper than private daycare.

Now how many children do they teach a day--maybe 20? That's $15.00 x 20 = 300.00 a day. But remember, they only work 180 days a year! I'm not going to pay them for all the vacations: $300.00 x 180 =$54,000. (Just a minute my calculator must need batteries.)

What will teachers say about those who have 10 years of experience and a master's degree? Well, maybe (just to be fair) they could get the minimum wage. We can round that off to about $6.00 an hour, times 5 hours, times 20 children. $6.00 x 5 x 20. That's $600 a day times 180 days. That's only $108,000.

Wait a minute...there is something wrong here...

Teachers around here are paid way to much..to make 80,000+ for half a years work is alot....but I don't think 54,000 is excessive..........
BTW...what a subject to start to stir the pot!

Actually, if you reread the OP's post she's saying teachers aren't paid ENOUGH. Look at the bottom calculation. It is pitiful what teachers are paid considering that they are on their feet all day, deal with parents and students, and always end up taking their work home with them. Around here the starting salary is $28,000. Just sad :sad2:

I'm sure the OP's post was entirely tongue-in-cheek. Unlike where you live, aprilgail2, teachers most places do NOT only work half a year, and do NOT make anywhere near $80K. If they start out at half that, they are lucky. Teachers here start at around $37K, and the pay increase per year of experience is minimal.

After 30 years, a teacher in NC will only make about $45,000. Plus, we work 10 months, which is nowhere close to half a year...that's 6 months.

Thanks! I'm glad you got the tongue in cheek!! I was starting to :scared:

Oh, I hope your kidding.

I may only be required to go into my classroom for 6 hours a day 180 days a year but I work all the time. Ask any teacher on the board, we are always on the lookout for materials or ideas that would work in the classroom. When you are a teacher it becomes a habit that you don't turn off at the end of the day. I spend my nights and weekends making plans and assessing. And summer is not a vacation, it is prep time for the next year. By the way, I have 10 years of experience and post grad work and I make no where near the $54,000 you mentioned.

EDITED to add: After re-reading your OP and reading many of the responses I see that you were kidding, and you made a good point too. But you know what's sad, a lot of people think like your OP. Many people actually believe that teachers are glorified babysitters. (I've had this said to me before)

Do you REALLY think teachers work only half a year?

And if teachers in your district DO work half a year and get paid $80,000, could you please send me an application? :rotfl2:

(FYI, I've taught for 16 years, am National Board Certified, work most of the way through the summers preparing for each school year, and make $45,000 per year.)

I was! I'm a teacher too :thumbsup2

i'm not touching this subject :rolleyes1

have fun all :teeth:

Salaries could triple overnight for teachers and it wouldn't be nearly enough for me to consider! A neighbor teaches elementary school and I've heard through her the horrors she has to contend with. I've gained tremendous respect and admiration for teachers over the "toddies" we've drunk together and the stories she's shared. Oh, and she doesn't have nearly 6 months off a year and is constantly working week-ends for upcoming classes. Her nights are filled with phone calls from upset and anxious parents. No, teaching is not for me at any salary. :guilty:

The most a teacher can make in our district is $45,000. They start in August and work into June, way more then 6 months. They get 2, yes 2 personal day/year and that is their sick time. If they can plan on being sick over Christmas, great, if not, they are home sick and unpaid. They don't get any vacation days so if their kids are sick, they are home with them unpaid. Yes, they do have some time "off" in the summer but since the only way a teacher can get more then a $100/year raise is to take more classes, get a masters/PhD, so they spend their summers taking classes, preparing for classes for the next school year, elementary teacher are in putting up bulletin boards, etc.

I've seen this email before and it is pretty sad when you put it into numbers like that. If you think teaching has such great pay, great hours, etc. why don't you get into teaching and stop complaining because we all know that teaching is the easiest job on earth. Never mind all the kids and their issues you have to deal with and the wonder parents that never do anything wrong and their KIDS certainly never misbehave.

Around here, teachers start out at about $26,000 a year. The only other lower paying job is probably mine, Legal Advocate for domestic and sexual assault victims.

That's a good one! Yeah, I think I make WAY too much, too! :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

Maybe we could knock a couple of thousand off my salary, and raise my insurance premiums as well! Yeah, that's the ticket! :woohoo:

I'm so glad to know I'm surrounded by teachers around here....we have to stick together!

Very clever. I was getting ready to get all mad about the OP not appreciating what a tough job teachers have (and getting harder every year).

As a teacher's daughter - THANK YOU to all teachers! :cheer2:

My day is 7 hours not 5 and some days there are no scheduled time for planning. Since my kids need interpreting if they are in the general community of the school I accompany them to lunch so I have no duty free lunch. I get max $107/day and if I work all year I get less than $20,000 per year. This is with a BS. Why? I'm a substitute.

That is exactly why I am not substituting in the schools anymore. For 4 years I made $80 a day as a substitute school nurse (RN, BSN). Maximum was $90 for long-term subs. I was a full-time school nurse for 7 years before I started to sub. As a sub I was making maybe 40% per day of what I was making full-time. So to heck with it. I'm tired of working in a profession (education) that is so messed up. Now I'm a prn (as needed) nurse for a doctor's office, and I'm making as much per hour there as I did as a full-time school nurse.

Substitute teacher/school nurse pay is pathetic. I don't see how anyone can sub in a classroom full of kids for that money. At least I only saw the kids a few at a time. Professionals (e.g. certified teachers, RNs) deserve to be treated like and paid as professionals, even if it is just on an "as needed" basis. In any other profession, professional temps are paid much, much more.

Okay - I'm off my soapbox now :p.

I'm sooo glad this was a joke, I don't think teachers make 1/10th what they deserve!

My boyfriend got his masters degree in English and was offered a job as a teacher's assistant for less than HALF of what I make! It was a INSULT! Unfortunately, I also found out that teachers who worked for years barely make 40,000 a year here in Atlanta. It's a sin before God...

Aw, come on now--I pay my babysitter $6.00 per hour--they're at LEAST worth THAT much, aren't they!! ;) :teeth:

LOL.. Ironically, my brother's GF is a retired phys ed teacher and she is a millionaire several times over - but not due to her salary.. Lots of investing and always living on less than what was coming in.. Still to this day she's a "bargain/thrift" shopper and can spot a good deal a mile away.. ;)
