What's UP with New Jersey?

As for the speeding tickets, it was known at the end of June, that state police will be cracking down on all speeders, in state and out of state drivers.

Exactly--I have seen people talking about this constantly..I never saw it mentioned that it was targeting out of staters, but everyone..I know alot of troopers and they all told me the same thing--nothing about out of staters

Sometimes it is not as easy as "just not speeding". When I had Texas tags on my car I cannot tell you the number of times I got stopped in Oklahoma for going TWO MILES over the speed limit. I am serious. I don't know if they had it in for Texans, or if I was just unlucky.

For years it was legal to drink and drive in Texas - just not be intoxicated. So you would see people driving down the road drinking a beer - legally.

I was drinking a Diet Coke and got pulled over in Okalahoma for driving ONE MILE over the speed limit. I was about 10 in the morning. After he gave me a "warning" ticket - I'm serious I actually got written up. I laughed and said to him "You really stopped me because you thought I was drinking a beer, didn't you." He didn't laugh.

Don't hold your breath people. I just called my sister. Her godson's father is a trooper and knows nothing of this. More of the same from Dawn.

Again Tim, I believe that I stated in a previous post that it doesn't matter if its true, if its false or if its a rumor to hurt the governor, the state of NJ or a figment of someone's imagination. It is a perception that many potential tourist have. I don't get the personal attacks that accompanied two of your posts; "more of the same, etc". Its called a discussion. If you can't participate without a personal attack, maybe you should abstain.

As a non resident, I don't give a fig about NJ's problems. I am pointing out to you the perception that many non residents have of NJ's problems and how that perception impacts tourism, one of your major industries and a major source of revenue for the state. How YOU solve YOUR state's problems is your business. Do realize however that perception is 9/10ths of reality and those perceptions could certainly impact NJ's immediate source of revenue.

Like I said, it's been known that NJ is targeting all speeders, out of state and in state. also read my post regarding my speaking with my sister.

I highly doubt these lies, I mean stories, that are being put on the airwaves will make Jane and Bob from Lehigh, PA skip their annual trip to LBI, or whoever that is.

No but perhaps beach and park closures, the closures of the casinos, etc will make them think about going elsewhere. I would think that a state that depends upon tourism would consider those things, "essential business".

Another bash what Dawn finds beneath her thread. Next time at least get your facts straight.

I don't need to get my facts straight. I am not a NJ voter. I see that you couldn't miss "another opportunity" however. You are soooo predictable.

Because who cares if the perception is wrong.

And I see you are dropping the idea that there was a directive given to the troopers. Makes one wonder if there ever was something about it on the radio.

Have you forgetton all the times you have posted the same kind of stuff?

It's state law that money cannot be spent without a budget (I'm actually ironically enough studying gov't accounting for the upcoming CPA exam). If the Legislature would just agree to the sales tax hike, this will be all over.

Again, maybe for people thinking of a taking a day trip tomorrow or the next few days, it will hurt tourism, but when the budget is finalized, the day after everything reopens, this will be a distant memory in people's minds.

OT: I was down the shore for fireworks last night, and there were enough out of state license plates to think we weren't even in NJ.

Not all beaches and parks are state run. There are plenty of privately owned parks and beaches to go to. I, for one am not concerned about the casinos.(their employees I do feel bad for) It's about time they didn't get "special" treatment. This is the law.. no one likes it, but it's reality. NJ is more than just Atlantic City!!!

Also a non resident, I don't share your perception at all. I'll continue to visit NJ, drive through NJ, and eat NJ produce. NJ is a nice neighbor to have.

I do feel for the workers that are being adversely affected by this.

And I should keep repeating it because???? I personally do not care if you think it was on the radio or not.

Is tourism really a huge source of income for NJ? After living in NJ for 40 years, I'm finding out that I really know nothing about our state....

Personally, I'm not sure I'd mind if some people stopped coming to the beaches...maybe then I could actually ENJOY them!

When I think of NJ, I think of Atlantic City, Wildwood, Point Judith, I think of tourism. DH thinks of oil, drug companies and the turnpike.

The articles about the shut down state that the top 4 revenue producers are: taxes on income, taxes on sales, taxes on corporations and the lottery. I know if I was paying the property tax that my parents are, I wouldn't want to see the sales tax go up.

LOL! I was thinking the same thing. Googling it.... It's in Rhode Island, not New Jersey.

Raising the state sales tax to 7 percent I do not believe would be a problem in this state, however, Corzine is trying to force it through like a 5 year old toddler screaming for a toy. At this rate, he'll ruin the democratic party in New Jersey for the next 10 years.

I don't want to see the sales tax raised to 7 percent, but it's easier to do than many other things, especially with all the shopping areas in northern New Jersey which many out of staters (New Yorkers specifically) visit because of the lower sales tax.

I trust Corzine with the finances of this state alot more than the Assembly and Senate, frankly. His resume is enough for me.

As for "pushing it through like a 5 year old toddler" I disagree. He knows what has to be done...the Legislature wants to do more of the same (borrow ). That is not the solution.

As for the 7% sales tax, it's less than NY and clothes are still tax-free.

You are right. Which goes to show, its been a long time since we have been to either place. ;) I was thinking of Cape May and the concrete ship.
