What's the scariest book you've ever read?

The worst was Abaddon by Bob Larson. It had to deal with satanists and it scared the poop out of me. I had to give it away as soon as I was done. I think the book continued to scare and get passed along quite regularly.

I have also always been freaked out bye Poe's The Telltale Heart. I don't even like to think about it.

I could barely make it through Stephen King's IT. I could only read it in the daytime.

I also got freaked out reading Helter Skelter.

The Haunting of Hill House is by far the scariest book (actually short story/novella) I've ever read. There was one chapter that scared me so badly that I had to wake up my husband and turn on all the lights!

I've never seen the movies based on this story because I assume they can't do it justice. It was written by the same suthor who wrote "the Lottery" whose name I'm blanking on right now. Shirley Jackson???

I also vote Red Dragon as the scariest book I've ever read! :scared1:

Without realy thinking, Gerald's Game by Stephan King pops into my head.

Okay, so I found the name of the author who has had all the faintings at his book readings. Here's a link to info about him:

What I find REALLY interesting (in a "yuck" sort of way) is how his father died.....

I unwittingly read Stephen King's Insomnia while I stayed at the hospital with my three year old son! :scared1: While it may not be his best work, I DO NOT recommend reading it while hospitalized!

Stephen King's "Misery" to this day the only book of his I have read.

Acually, It was 1984. That book made me actually gasp out loud and had me freaked and paranoid for weeks!

I have read the majority of these books and agree they are all scary!!!!

One more to add to the list..."Lucifer's Hammer" by Larry Nevin and Jerry Pournelle. It is about a comet that hits the earth and how the different characters make their way thru destruction and chaos, eventually converging at a "safe haven."

It's scary because it is so realistic and the author really puts you into the action.

When I was a kid I read a book about the adventures of Ulysses. It gave me nightmares. That was over 30 years ago, and I haven't read a scary book since (don't watch scary movies either)
