What's the "rule"?

Last night we went to a GREAT event for New Year's Eve- It was "First Night" in Ocean City, NJ. We had a blast! The rides were open on the boardwalk and there was great entertainment! My question is this- we had several instances where people in front of us were saving places for the rest of their party. No problem. I understand that concept and am fine with it. Especially with several children in the family- it just makes sense (we only have 1 kid but I know that kids might be on different rides or the bathroom or whatever...)- My question is this- should people who are joining their party in line say something to the people they are passing? Even just an "excuse me"? THe first time it happened- I just thought the people were rude but then a couple of rides later- it happened again and no one said anything. And then it happened AGAIN! So, is it not necessary to say something? Or were these people being typical Jersey-ites (spoken with love, I'm native!)?
I just am confused!!!!

Are you talking about people in line leaving for a potty break with a small child and coming back, or people just getting into line later to catch up with someone holding a space?

Either way, you'll get a bunch of differing opinions...

I might let a person or MOM and Child go (even at Disney)but more then that I ask them to tell the party up front to join them in the back.

DD always wants to do other things while we wait in line and I tell her no she has to wait like everyone else.So it would be hypocritical to just keep letting droves of people by.

If they give me a hard time I just point it out to an attendant most of the time others will back you up on this.

saving places for large party...not so good. Especially if you are closer to the entrance of the ride. I have been at the back of the line (just starting in with a few folks behind us) and had members of our party "catch up" with us. Maybe they stopped to tie a shoe lace, grab a drink of water, whatever.. and asked those behind if they minded.

I think if you are cutting the line, say excuse me, pardon me and thank you (also I'm sorry would help) and explain the situation, but don't cut the line if it is towards the front. Not to fair to me and my child and all the folks you just cut in front of....

JMHO,

I agree that people should say excuse me. I really wasn't even worried about the other people joining the party- I figured we'd get on eventually and at some point in our lives would need to use the line holder concept - so I'd build up karma points towards it by letting others go. I just would have thought an "excuse me" would have been in order. And for it to happen several times- I thought there was some etiquette I was missing!
thanks for the suggestions!

I think saying "excuse me" is the polite thing to do.

I don't have a problem with one or two people catching up with their party, but I do think it's nice when the party "falls back" to join the late arrivers instead of expecting everyone to just move over for them.

Offically at WDW at least, line cutting is prohibitted and can get you thrown out of line - DH actually saw this happen once on our last trip - but the two doing it were not trying to join anyone - they were just cutting through the line to get to the front (I didn't witness it as I was outside the ride waiting with ds, but I think they were using the empty fastpass lanes part of the time to do this). When they got to the last CM people were complaining and they got thrown out - served them right too.

If it is a parent/child, I don't even notice. I figure it is some sort of child-related incident. If it is adults, I say something. When adults need to stop for a drink, potty, etc, then their party needs to wait at the end of the line for their group, then get into line. If I found out the tardy party was off riding a ride, then cut in front of me, I would be furious!:furious:
