what's the point of a subwoofer?

actually i knew that. but is that ALL it does? anything else? do i need them if i get good bass out of my regualr computer speakers?

With mp3s I've noticed that there isn't that big of a difference with the 128s, but 192s & up to 320s it does make a difference.

thanks jeff. i don't think i'll splurge on it - i mostly have 128kps, and i think my wallet is still a little thin. ;) :)

It's actually far more useful for movies, etc. A lot of DVD movies contain sounds that are too low for any regular speakers to handle well.
Things like a rocket blasting off or the crack of a cannon would be examples but there is a suprising amount of low bass info in every movie

On a computer, which is what it sounds like you'd be purchasing this for...probably not gonna make a whole lot of difference. For a home theater setup it is absolutely critical. The subwoofer, in most HT setups whether playing Dolby Digital, DTS or even the older Pro-Logic type soundtracks is known as the LFE channel or low frequency effects channel. This will provide the rumble as jets blast by or an "imperial star cruiser" lumbers by on the screen watching Top Gun or Star Wars. Most speaker systems for computers are made up of very small drivers for speakers, whic really leave alot to be desired in their ability to produce good deep bass, and depth of sound.

I'd say if you weren't really "in" to the idea of HT and "hi-fi" sound, you probably don't need it.

He barks at the captain if the hatch was left open!

A very important position, mind you!
