What's the difference between Toy Story Mania & Buzz Lightyear Ride??

I've only gone to the Buzz Lightyear Ride at MK. Toy Story Mania at DHS looks like it's essentially the same ride.

Is there a huge difference between the two?

TSM is way more fun for me. There's just something about those paintballs I like by comparison. And I walloped my nephew the first time through - something that's never happened in Buzz! (Did I mention I like TSM? :thumbsup2 )

I prefer TSM. On Buzz, I can never figure out what I'm shooting at, whereas it's very apparent on TSM. I like the variety of the games on TSM, and it's easier to know when you're supposed to shoot.

I wonder why they didn't just update BL into TSM instead of making 2 separate attractions. So far, TSM just seems like a better version of BL:confused3

There is a huge difference between the two.

TSM has interactive graphics and some other special effects that immerse you in the experience.

They are so very different. It wouldn't be possible to "update" Buzz into a TSM ride. In Buzz you move through different scenes and shoot at targets. In TSM you move to different screens and play different midway-type games. While they are both shoot-at-targets-to-score-points rides, the technology and experience in each is completely unique.

Huge difference.

Buzz Lightyear, of course, is older. The one at WDW has big guns, mounted to the ride car. They're somewhat difficult to aim. I can never locate my laser beam. Guests can rotate the ride car with a joystick to get better aim. It's a space theme (obviously) and your "mission" is to shoot the Zs and defeat emperor Zurg.

TSM is new, is a creative juxtaposition of cutting-edge technology and classic midway games. Guests wear 3-D glasses and use pull-to-shoot guns (which are so much easier to shoot) to play 3-D games. You weave in and out of the midway area and play a variety of different games.

I personally enjoy TSM a lot more (even though my sister beats me on TSM and I always beat her on Buzz). It's so much more interactive. You can't see the other players during each game, so it's a lot more personal (you can see them through screen transition, though). It's also so much easier to tell the difference between your gun and your partner's gun (one red, one blue), as well as easier to tell what you're aiming for and whether or not you got it.

I agree, TSM is better. Obviously because its newer and Disney probably learned how to make it better from Buzz Lightyear.

IMO TSM is way better. With Buzz I can never tell where on earth my laser is aimed and I end up frustrated. I am just awful at it.:rotfl: TSM is a lot more interactive and fun.:thumbsup2

TSM is much better because it steers your car for you...the one thing I hate about buzz is that it has the joystick so that one person in the cart has to constantly be worrying about whether or not there are things to shoot at while trying to shoot at them...and the other person has to only worry about shooting the targets. It's great that TSM does it on it's own.

TSM is hundreds of times better and you get an incredible arm workout on one arm :rotfl2:

The only way they are alike is that they both have an interactive nature with shooting devices. Saying they are alike is like saying Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain are alike because in both you just ride in a car and look at scenery.

TSM and Buzz use totally different technology as others have explained. They are nothing alike, and I find TSM to be incredibly enjoyable and engaging while Buzz is frustrating and overwhelming.

TSM is a workout! I have never laughed so hard in my life on a ride.:rotfl2: :rotfl:

We had a blast. Plus my wife actually stands some sort of chance of beating me! Not really, but she doesnt have me controlling the car so I can play BL and she just goes along for the ride.

I really enjoyed this ride. We were down in Oct. for the TOT 13k. While my wife was running our friend we had brought down for her 1st visit went and played over and over until she finished the race..Then we all went back and played a few more times. My arm was like jello!

Buzz is different; because, you control the position of your car when shooting. I feel the shooting device is less accurate than TSM. I think Buzz goes a little fast for shooting purposes. I get tired shooting on the Buzz ride, as well. Also, I feel TSM is better; because, when you are shooting you are standing still in your car. The sound effects in TSM are absolutely the best I've seen for a ride when you are shooting. The shooting arenas are different on each leg of the ride for TSM which I find much more interesting. The queue is more interesting on TSM.

I could ride TSM all day long and be content. After twice on Buzz I'm done.

The only similiarity I see is they both involve shooting at targets.

I would go as far as to say TSM is the best ride to date that Disney has to offer.

I agree with everyone else. TSM is so much better and more fun than BL. We only got to ride once. :sad1: I wish we could have rode it more times. Hopefully next time. It is a ton of fun! :thumbsup2

everything is different. not even remotely the same attraction. TSM is based on Toy Story while Buzz Lightyear is based on Buzz & Zurg from Toy Story.

The only similarity is that you sit in a cart and pull a trigger. everything else is different.

We liked TSM the most.

After one time around on BL, my hand/arm hurt like the dickens. It took 9 times in a row at TSM for my arm/shoulder to start hurting. By the 13th time, it was screaming at me, but you will never hear me complain!! I can't imagine doing BL more than twice in a row...just too darn painful, and I never score well anyway!!

On top of the aformentioned experiences... they have some major mechanical differences.

Buzz is a continuous ride (known as a belt ride) that keeps guests constantly moving. TSM if four different compartments, 2 guns a compartment, which is only 8 people a trip (which explains the longer weight). Only two people are competing for the same targets - opposed to a huge amount of people in Buzz. Which makes it much easier to get some points, and you feel like you are more accomplished.

Buzz has the same basic target, and beyond the one "special" target (worth 999,999 points) there are no other surprises. TSM is full of secrets to unlock... there is a special bonus round in each game. If you play enough and are good with your aim you could unlock a different game each time you play.

Not to mention the sheer effect of TSMs 3D - flashes of air, water squirting, those are a great surprise!

I agree with everyone else. I like TSM because of the effects. On Buzz, there's like a billion other lazers, so you can never tell what you're shooting at. Also, on TSM I like on the part where you have to shoot the ring on the aliens, the law of gravity, so you have to aim high. We got to ride TSM 4 times on our trip! :)

I agree with this. I love Buzz Lightyear but it is very hard to aim and like you, I can never tell exactly where I'm aiming. On TSM you can see how off you are and adjust your shot, on Buzz it's hard to tell how off you are.
