I understand "BUFFETS" are all you can eat.(Ex:Golden Corral-Hometown Buffet) But what exactly is "Family Style"?

It's also "all you can eat" but instead of getting up and getting your food like a buffet, it is a fixed menu and is brought to your table in bowls and platters.

IMO, family style is much nicer- especially for character meals. It is so great to be able to just sit back and have them bring the food to you!

But on the downside, there is less variety.

Family Style is brought to your table in caserole dishes, etc., and you eat like you would at home as a "family" by passing around the dishes and taking what you want. These are normally AYCE as well, and you can ask for more of anything to be brought.

This is different from pre-plated, which I can't think of any place other than Cindy's that is doing that at the moment.

OK, when I think "FAMILY STYLE" I think about special occasion church meals when I was a kid. Easter morning the men of our church would do the cooking and serve the memberhip after Sunrise service. Platters of grits/hash browns-eggs-bacon/sausage & biscuits.

Family style since it is brought to you at your table, is a more fixed menu than an All You Can Eat Buffet.
