What's the deal with full occupancy the second week in Jan?

I called MS today to see what I can get the second week in Jan. I asked for a 1BR anywhere from 1/10 to 1/16 and the only thing available is SSR. I thought I can always get OKW for what I thought would be a slow time period. I know that MLK day is the 15th, but besides that what else would there be? I also know that there are various competitions during Jan. but I have visited during the same time period before and had no problem.

So I ask, what's up with that? Are the xmas decorations still up? What gives? I really had my heart set on OKW but if I want to go I guess it's SSR or nothing.

We used to vacation that time of year. It has always been "busy" for DVC, and MLK weekend is busy at the parks. Remember that times that may be slow for Disney in general are often VERY busy for DVC because of the lower points required.

Low number of points is a big reason. That's why DVC has different point levels for different times of the year, to even things off a bit. Looks like it's working.

Why don't you take SSR and waitlist at OKW?

We went this EXACT week this past Jan, we took SSR and then about 1 month before I got the LONG AWAITED, "Your waitlist came thru" I had the choice of BWV studio or 1 bedroom, we took the 1 bedroom and LOVED it. We were offered both preferred or standard so waitlist's do come thru!!!!

Good luck

Thanks

I was going to waitlist OKW and take SSR hopefully tomorrow. Thanks for the quick answers.

It could also just be when you are calling. I called in Aug. and had several resorts to choose from for that time period. We are traveling 1/11-1/15. We wanted SSR, so it worked out for us. Have fun and I hope your waitlist comes through!

Unless you asked about every single day individually, they will only tell you what is available for the entire range of dates you want. As you pointed out, your trip dates coincide with the MLK holiday. Could be only a couple of nights sold out at all other resorts, but that will keep you from getting a room for your entire period.

I called for Spring break about a month ago for Bwv and was told nothing. I checked some other things and then called back and it turned out that all the nights I wanted were available but 1. I waitlisted it and it has already came in. It actually was available in a standard view at the time of booking so I did book it but it came through in preferred. I thing the first MS person just didn't want to piece it together. I would call again.

I have a ressie for Jan. 3-9. I originally booked cash res. for the weekend nights. Called today to switch one w/e night to points and they had nothing available. That is marathon weekend, but I didn't think the points nights would book up completely.

Marathon weekend is January 6-7, so that brings more folks in. Folks start arriving the 4th or 5th and are usually there till the 8th or 9th.

We fly in on 1/10 and check out on 1/16 same time period you are looking for. I called about 3 or 4 weeks ago and was able to get a 1br at okw. Then a few days later sister in law decided to come down so I called and was able to get a 2br at okw no problem. I also asked and they had availablity at BW and VWL. So I'm not sure what happened in the last couple of weeks but, I guess I am glad I called when I did. :cheer2:

I just spoke with them today about the next week. And they had a 1 bed available at BWV I was looking for a studio which they didn't have. But maybe you could go later? Just a suggestion.

January 15th is Martin Luther King Day, and lots of schools around here add a few days as the end of the semester which gives 4-5 days to people for a vacation. We're rare in that our semester break is one week later--so that's when we're headed tp WDW.

Just to let you know, By coincidense I waslooking to go the the World next week. BWV has a studio available through CRO. OKW has one and 2 bedrooms left. That is for a cash ressie not points though.

Hope this helps.

Interesting, I went on the waitlist for one night. I should check CRO. Maybe if they have it on cash, my waitlist will come through? We'll see! Thanks.

Just a word of warning that CRO has a separate inventory of DVC rooms than those DVC members can book. Just because there is a room in the CRO inventory doesn't have any bearing on your waitlist request going through.

CRO only gets a tiny, tiny fraction of the DVC room inventory, but they are often slow to book since cash guests can RENT the same room from a member much cheaper.

Yes thank you. I am aware of that. But knowing it's available for cash sort of gives you the hope (misguided as that may be) that your waitlist will come thru.

Thanks

We went this this time of year last January and it was pretty busy. We waited for 1hr & 20min to see Nemo at EPCOT.
It wasn't Summer busy, but busier then I was prepared for.
Of course we still had a nice time and the weather was perfect.

It's not just the second week of January that's booked. The third week is booked up too. We called about a week and a half ago and the only studios available was at SSR, which is great by the way and I can't wait to stay there! :thumbsup2 But, there's nothing going on the third week of January (no holidays or special events), so I'm assuming that it's booked because it's value season for DVC resorts.:goodvibes
