What's the best DVC resort to stay at with kids?

Hi everyone. I am looking to rent points for a 10 night stay in September. I KNOW my kids would love to stay at the value resorts, but mama would like to stay somewhere nicer since this may be a once in a lifetime thing. I'm leaning towards Beach Club so we can visit stormalong bay. I had heard somewhere that we get access to all resort pools? Is that true? Are there any other activities for the kids at the hotels? They will be 2, 6 and 7. And as far as comfort goes, are the studio rooms big enough that we won't feel cramped, or is it better to upgrade to a 1 bedroom? I do notice that some of the 1 bedrooms lower their occupancy, which doesn't make much sense to me, but in case my sister decides to come with us, I need a 5 occupancy room. Thanks for the help.

Certain WDW DVC resorts have studios that sleep five -- Boardwalk Villas, Beach Club Villas, Villas at Wilderness Lodge (now named Boulder Ridge Villas), Polynesian Villas, and Villas at Grand Floridian -- because they have a queen bed, a pull-out couch and a murphy type pull down bed from a cabinet that is under the TV (that murphy bed is somewhat smaller than a twin and is best for small adults, teens or children). Can you do five in those? Obviously yes? Is it a comfortable five? That is a matter of opinion but many of us would never do it because we believe it is far too cramped.

The 1BRs are huge in comparison to the studios. They have a living room with a pull out couch and a master bedroom with a king. Animal Kingdom Kidani, Bay Laker Tower, and Old Key West have an extra pull-out twin chair in the living room, and Grand Floridian has one of those murphy bed arrangements, and thus those can sleep five. The others can sleep only 4, but allow five if you provide your own sleeping materias for the fifth (e.g., a blow-up, a sleeping bag, and any needed sheets, blankets and pillows for same). The 1BRs also gives you a full-kitchen and a washer/dryer. The 1BRs at Kidani and Bay lake Tower also give you a second bathroom.

Personally with five, I would choose a 1BR. If it includes children who will spend a lot of time at Magic Kingdom, I would likely choose Bay Lake, which provides easy access to MK and gives you a very large room and a second bathroom. Grand Floridian would also be fine but significantly more expensive and only one bathroom. Second choice for five would be the 1BR at Kidani, also very large, and a good pool with a very impressive kids water play area. If you want to do a studio or five in a 1BR that has beds for only 4, then BCV would be fine with its access to Stormalong Bay, but Boardwalk would be fine too for the Epcot area. There are kids activities at all the resorts but Animal Kingdom Lodge, both Jambo and Kidani, would be an ideal choice for those with young kids.

As to pools, members have certain privileges to pool hop among resorts, renters from members do not. You do get access to any pools at the particular resort you are staying, e.g., Bay Lake Tower guests can use the pool at Bay Lake and at the Contemporary because they are both part of the same resort.

Be aware that owners of a particular resort can begin reserving their own resort at 11 months out from arrival. Owners of any resort can reserve another DVC resort beginning 7 months out. If you do not reserve by 7 months out, your choices can become very limited. Moreover, though Sep is generally a fairly easy time to get rooms, there are certain rooms that often require using the 11 month reservation window to assure getting them: Animal Kingdom value and club level rooms, Bay Lake standard view, Boardwalk standard and boardwalk view studios and 2BRs, and Grand Floridian studios; BCV studios also have a risk of disappearing before 7 months out. If you want to try for any of those, then what you need to do is look immediately for a rental (and some of those may already be filled for some days you want)

I agree with drusba on pretty much everything above. BLT a great choice due to proximity to MK and extra bathroom; Kidani is also great due to the extra bathroom and the theming and the animals.

With very young children I would stay at a mono rail resort. I'm a big BWV fan and stay there most of the time but having a 2 year old grandson ,I could see where the convenience might off set my obvious preference. I do not like BLT at all so that would be out for me but I loved grand Floridian . It was beautiful if you can afford it.

If you pick AK and a standard view 1 BR for 10 night in Sept, you are looking at 256-262 points. Typical rentals run about $14 a point, there are some a few $$ more or less. So about $3584 - 3668 at $14 a point for a standard view. List is $611 a night from Disney for a standard view, with tax included.
BLT you should be able to get a lake view, I doubt you could get a standard view for 10 nights. That would be 272-284 points for a standard view or 320-330 for a lake view 1 BR. STD view list is $748 Lake is $767 per night.
Yes, Disney is expensive. Good luck. Book soon as the standard view unit go quicker, ideally you want to book more than 7 months in advance.

@BillPA, the savings is amazing doing it this way! However, I am also taking into consideration the free dining for my dates. Disney dining plan is about 1800 , so if I can book a moderate resort for the same or less than a deluxe this way, and save the 1800 on dining, I just don't know. Boy this is so NOT the same as Disneyland planning, is it?

We just did a 7 day last summer in 1BR at BLT. 2 adults, 3 kids 2, 5 and 7. While BLT was not the cheapest option this resort ended up being a great decision. Location and transportation ended up being the best advantage with close excellent restaurants. All of these were especially important with having a two year old to deal with (very few long bus rides) Was also able to get an adjoining studio for the grandparents. The in room washer and dryer also allowed us to pack lighter than we would have otherwise and kitchen for having a couple stay in meals. Pool at BLT and Contemporary was very nice. Kids also loved being able to watch firework from the hotel each night. They also had a Disney movie and free popcorn under the stars one night and s'mores another night. BLT also has a nice activities center on first floor for the kids. I am sure AKL and OKW could also give you a great experiece in a 1BR but I would recommend BLT if you are OK with the cost.

We loved BLT last stay we went my son was 2 it was awesome being able to walk home form MK especially after the firework

Frankly, I'm not sure there's a BAD DVC resort to stay at for young kids. We stayed at OKW when we took our DGDs (2yo and 4 yo), only because it's DH's favorite, and the points are lowest. If you asked the girls, they'd probably say it was the best-pool and parks (they didn't know or care about a bus vs monorail). I'll admit though, that we had a good location-DH and I are at OKW now, way far from the HH, and we've agreed that we're too far away if we had the little ones. So I'd recommend the HH category-I guess we lucked out with our location.

I agree. I've stayed in almost all of the DVC resorts and have yet to find a bad one. Some I merely prefer over others.

I will argue, though, that focus and kid interests matter a lot.

BCV can be an issue if you have more kids, or small kids, than adults. That pool is so big, and it can be stressful if you have a kid for the area for littles and a kid who is borderline for the bigger areas, which can be the case when you have a 5-year age spread. It's great with better/older swimmers, or if you have a solid adult-child ratio and don't dream of a lounger with a cocktail. :drinking1

If your kids are devoted to the water, I happen to think the BLT/CR splash area is lame. It's "local community center" class for theming, especially if you compare it to the splash areas at Poly or GF or WL, or even the Kidani water play area. Similarly, I hope they eventually do something with a stronger theme for the littles at Boardwalk, even though I won't need it any more.

Saratoga has good splash areas, and even OKW have funny dolphin sculptures at least.

But if you're park warriors, things like "pool amenities" matter less.

So you have to think about the kind of trip you're after and the interests of your kids (and your own, to get back to that cocktail example -- Poly's Oasis pool may be my new favorite pool bar).

Kids that age love the pools, so my main recommendation is based on the pools.

(1) Beach Club Villas for Stormalong Bay and Epcot location. BUT you'll have to book NOW for a September vacation, some weekends may already be sold out for Food and Wine.
(2) Grand Floridian for the Alice splash zone and the MK location. The monorail is very convenient.
(3) Animal Kingdom for the Kidani pool and the animals. The Kidani splash pad is one of the finest in WDW. Even your older kids will love it. ONLY sleeps 4.

Your other questions:

(1) No, non-DVC members may not pool hop.
(2) There are TONS of activities at every WDW resort. DVC resorts have additional activities geared toward "staying home" in the room like games and the like. Some resorts have community halls that have additional activities.
(3) Will you be more comfortable in a one bedroom? Undoubtedly. It will also cost you nearly twice as much. Are you comfortable in a single hotel room now? Your immediate family will be able to fit in a studio fine but it will be a bit cramped with an extra adult in the room even if the occupancy is 5. You can still swing a studio with 3 adults and 3 kids. We just came back from a vacation with 2 adults and a 17-year old in a studio and it was fine. We've shared a studio with 2 teens before and it's OK too. The studios that sleep 5 have a fold out couch and a day bed that the kids will fight over. IMO if you bump up to a 1 bedroom to simply accommodate your sister the $1000-$2000 extra per week is not chump change.

Storm along Bay is really spread out and very hard to kept track of children in different age groups. There is another thread that discusses this more, but I can't find it right now.

Eh, you sum it up just fine.

SAB is huge. If you have kids in different age groups, the areas they will be interested in are spread out. Depending on ages, your comfort, etc. this can be a pain point.

Unless your kids are junior Michael Phelps, you will not want them at SAB. It has some areas with swift currents and deep depths (like 8 feet). Especially if they don't want to stay right in the same place as you.

In addition to being huge, it has poor sight lines - so you can't see - say the pool slide - from the zero entry area.

SAB is a strange pool - its awesome when all your kids are little - its got a great kids slide and an awesome zero entry period. Its fine if your kids don't need to be watched in the pool - but in my experience, by the time that happened, they'd rather spend the day at a water park.

Each resort has its unique qualities and for each, I love them all. But with kids that age, the proximity of BLT to MK(10 min walk)would lend me to stay at BLT. Now if Epcot and HS is more in line with what your kids would like, BCV or BWV either one will do the trick

Staying 10 days with 5 people I would definitely do a 1BR. My own personal preference is AKL Kidani (kids 1 and 4). They love their splash area, zero entry pool and they have 2 water slides (one tiny one that my 1yr old loved!). I know people's only complaint is that is a fair distance to MK and others. But the enjoyment my kids get waking up and running to the balcony to see the animals first thing in the morning is priceless. Doesn't hurt that it is our DVC home resort either :yay:.

The Poly has a new splash area and pool, and also on the mono. We'll see how that is in August!!

While a 1BR would be ideal, for the cost involved in renting points, you might find that the cost to just rent a regular room at the Poly would be about the same price as a 1BR at BLT. The regular Poly room has 2 queen beds and a sofa and is comfortable for five. The Poly also has a great pool. And, if there is a free dining promotion, you'd be eligible (free dining is not offered for DVC reservations). MK and Epcot are both easily accessible via monorail from the Poly.

I don't think you'd find BCV to be comfortable for five, even if one is a toddler. The studio accommodations are a queen and a pull out bed. As some one else noted, SAB is pretty spread out. It would be pretty difficult to keep an eye on all the kids even with both uou and your wife watching them.

BLT is an awesome resort for families with small children due to the easy accessibility from the MK. Like BCV, I think you'd find a studio somewhat cramped for five people.

You're roughly 9 months from your proposed trip. While September isn't a particularly busy month, some categories of rooms may be unavailable to you at this point in DVC. I doubt, however, whether this includes lake or theme park view studios or 1BR at BLT, or regular hotel rooms at the Poly.

The Poly rooms, for the standard view (lowest cost) is $508/$539 a night. Plus they charge $25 a night + tax/per adult (over 18) if more than 2 per room.
DVC does not charge for extra adults.
