whats the best baby gift??

I never had a baby, but have been to numerous baby showers and the thing that seems to get peole the most excited is a "goody basket". I've seen folks do a baby batht ub, with all the accesories for giving baby a bat in it(shampoo, wash cloths, hooded towel, rubber duckie)...very cute. I have done a basket where I have included useful baby items(nail clippers, pacifiers, electric socket covers and other Safety items, rattles, diapers etc).

I usually give a hand crocheted blanket or hand made quilt and add some onsies, socks, wash clothes and towels and maybe a hat. Sometimes I will add pjs or and outfit. They all are in matching colors. The blankets are more the type for Mom to take the baby out to church or other outing to show the baby off not for using in the crib. Lacey things but I would say not that practical but I add other practical things to go with it. Often later if the Mom is a special friend I will give her a matching colored crocheted throw blanket that she can use when the two of them are snuggling and reading on the sofa or in a recliner.

At work we gave a co-worker a gift certificate for photos, a photo album and a resturant gift certificate to mom's favorite resturant.

I'd second the vibrating bouncy baby seat it saved our sanity more than once.
::yes::

I'm actually going to a shower this weekend, and I haven't shopped yet (OYE!) I've looked at the registry and noticed she didn't register for one of these bouncy seats. (and I know she doesn't have one)

Do you think it would be rude to buy her one of these? (I'd give her the gift receipt, just in case...I've given bouncy seats at 3 other showers, and the mom's all love them)

So should i do it? even though it's NOT on the registry?

Yes, those gift registries are really supposed to be a guide, not something you have to pick from.
I am sure the mom will love it, and if not, she can always return it.

Yes, get it! I didn't know about these with DS#1 and a friend got me one (and it wasn't on my registry). I thought it was so awesome! As someone else said, the registry is a guide and you don't HAVE to buy off of it. Including the gift receipt is a very good idea though...

The perfect baby gift depends on the recipient's financial situation, whether it's the first or a subsequent baby and many other factors. Here are some ideas:

1. Every baby needs a couple of outfits from a great store like Gymboree, Neiman Marcus, or the like. I'm too practical to spend that much money myself, but it was nice to receive some super cute outfits.

2. One cute idea was a small amount of cash sticking out of an adorable piggy bank.

3. Our church choir always gives new parents a "diaper shower."

4. For second, or esp. 3rd or 4th babies, I like to buy an assortment of practical but adorable bibs, so the new parents can throw away the stained ones they already have.

5. For first babies, a really nice, colorful book of Nursery Rhymes. Also great are classic board books like "Goodnight Moon."

When I was home with my 3rd baby, a client called me - it happened to be on the day my mother left - and asked, "May I bring you a honey baked ham?" It was such a sweet jesture.

My absolute best gift was my friend paid 2 months for a cleaning sevice for me. I also think a gift certificate to a local take out restuarant is a good idea. if everyone knows its a boy she will get a ton of clothes, i would probably get a gift certificate for teh store so she can buy bigger sizes

One of the best gifts I ever received was a gift certificate for Kinderfoto (a place that takes children's portraits). It was a gift I would never think of and came in very handy when it came time to bring my son to have his first professional photos taken. One of my friends gave it to me along with a handmade baby photo album. Good luck!:)

I agree with Robinrs-diapers! My favorite gift was from a friend who worked for Kimberly-Clark and gave us a CASE of Huggies. It seemed to last forever.

Well this is more a personal choice thing........what one considers perfect someone else would consider so not worthwhile.

I was told by my step sister that the gift I gave her when she had her first daugther was the best gift she received.

I covered a basket in baby material & bows, put a padded bottom in it & then filled it with things like baby powder, baby oil, cotton buds, cotton balls etc.........all the essentials & she used it for all 3 of her babies & told everyone it was the best gift anyone could have given her.

I loved every gift we got. The ones we used the most were:
cloth diapers(used them for burp towels, clean up...); larger
size clothes; new camera(this was an entire shower's gift);
blankets- I used them on floors, as a barrier when people
held DS, as extra warmth in the stroller. He's almost 9 and
still sleeps with one in his bed because it's old and soft. Shhhh-
don't tell "the guys!"
I liked the developmental toys too!
