Hi, I'm going out shopping tomorrow for a baby boy who will be born in late May. I was wondering what was the best gift someone gave you when you had your children. I know baby einstein is great a got a set of 4 dvds for him. What is something creative or something simple you just loved to get or gave to someone.

:teeth:
My DD spit up a lot. One of my fav gifts was "lap pads". I remember opening them at the shower and not knowing what they were. I also remember someone telling me I would figure it out real soon! And boy, did I ever! They are cheap but so useful!

I received a lot of really nice, high dollar things too. But the practical things were what I most loved having.
Happy shopping!

Personalized baby blankets. I use an internet store (guess that is what it is called) and have gotten the most beautiful baby blankets, with names and birthdates embroidered on, and they are reasonable. They are top quality, and last forever. I have bought a lot of them, and people are always thrilled and they get lots of use. PM me if you would like the name of the website. (I don't know if it would be okay for me to put it here, but would love to share it with you.)

Meals on Wheels. One of my friends organized meals for the first 10 days after we got home from the hospital. At least for the first week and a half, I did not have to worry about cooking, and everyone made som much I had enough food for lunches and a couple of extra dinners. Awesome gift!!!

One of those vibrating baby seats that you can hook baby into while you are cooking dinner, taking a shower, etc; the one I got for my second son even played music/ocean sounds etc. Heaven sent!

A diaper Genie is also a must have!

This stuff. ;) I think it is sooooo stinking cute. I got my cousin some for her son.

Other than that, I really appreciated outfits that were for larger sizes. I received tons of 0-3 and 3-6 but then I found myself out of clothes. Those outfits for 6-12 and higher really came in handy as something to put them in while I got out to get more clothes. They grow so fast in that first year!

in my opinion the best baby gift is one off of her registry, if she has one. expecting parents do so much research usually on items they want for their baby, and if they took the time to do a registry I can pretty much guarantee they will be thrilled with anything off of it.

other than that, things I love are my baby bjorn, a bouncy seat, clothes in larger sizes than 3-6 months, receiving blankets, absolute favorite cd is Return to Pooh corner by Kenny Loggins. Its what I rocked/nursed my son at bedtime to. Never got sick of it. I need to pull it out for the twins. My husbands aunt gave us a huge memory box, which is nice, although we still have yet to put his stuff in it. a gymanie is nice to have.

I never really use regular blankets...I have a couple for their stroller, but don't use them in the crib for safety reasons. I can't tell you how many beautiful blankets people have given us, but they have never been used. I do however love quilts. My mom has made a few, and I use them on the floor for them to lay on.

I'm trying to think of some other things, but I'm brain dead from lack of sleep. twins are 4 weeks now and I know someday I'll sleep again, but I really don't remember what its like at this point. :)

Have fun shopping!!!!

Recieving blankets made from diaper material and trimmed with lace or crchet edging. Perfect cover up for a So Fla baby.

I am also practical and give a basket, wastebasket that is.....in a neutral color and put in all sorts of goodies. I give diapers, wipes, nail clippers, ipecac syrup, baby tylenol, infant measuring spoons for meds, bibs, baby food, maybe a baby blanket, baby bath, baby powder, diaper ointment, and/or cloth diapers to be used for burp cloths or as some call them spit rags. Weird assortment.....but one I enjoy giving and people enjoy getting!

My MIL made me hooded bath towels that were wonderful and I am still using them on my 5 yr old! You buy a bath towel and a handtowel (the handtowel is the hood) and sew part of the handtowel on to make a hood. I can't explain it good but I'm sure you could figure it out if you laid the towels by each other. I liked these so much because they were thicker than the ones you can buy already made for baby and much bigger.

Let me explain something prior to my answer. Dear MIL is a SERIOUS packrat (DW has learned all too well, I might add). She has stacks of magazines dating back some 20 years, and is a huge history buff on the states of Kentucky and Tennessee. She even found the purchase receipt to HER dad's first car and still has the original receipt.

That said as a backdrop, the best gift we got for DD5.75 was my wifes diapers! Dear MIL washed them and stashed them away for about 36 years until DD5.75 was born. Then, my DW's diapers made great burp cloths.

For my first child we were poor, so diapers and gift cards were our favorite gifts.
For second child I loved getting bigger size clothing.
For my third child the best gift was new baby blankets.

My favorite gift to give is not for the baby at all. I like to put together a care basket for the new Mommy. Bottled water, relaxation tapes, heat pad, breast pads, an eye shade (for naps), and that sort of thing.

My favorite gift was a basket of food sent to the hospital. I was so hungry there. It takes a lot of calories to nurse, and it's a long time between dinner and breakfast.

We use cloth diapers, so all of the disposibles we got went to the crisis pregnancy center. Always ask first before you buy those. I did like the gifts of larger sized clothes, and I really loved good quality socks. The cheap socks aren't worth the money you pay for them, but the good ones are wonderful. Carters makes decent socks that are both affordable and stay on well.

actually there are two gifts that stood out for me, first was a gift certificate to have her first picture taken and the other gift was from a friend who is very creative she made up these beautiful announcements for me with matching thank you cards. It was very thoughtful of her.

A giftcard to the store they registered at. I've seen friends get tons of clothes for the baby (cuz they're so cute to buy!) and nothing practical. This way with a gc, they can fill in the holes. What can I say, I'm practical  LOL

When our second baby was born some friends chipped in and gave us a gc for 3 catered and delivered meals. Dh and I could each choose an entree, a vegetable and a dessert. At least we had 3 really good meals in those first few hectic weeks.

A Boppy pillow - I used it while nursing, DH liked to hold the baby on it, and I used it again to support the girls when they were learning ot sit up.

Soemone gave my cousin a wipe warmer at her baby shower. I don't know if she ever used it, but we all got a kick out of watching her open it!

For my dd, the best gift would probably have been all the diapers I got at my shower. For my ds, the best gift was one of those vibrating baby seats. He loved that thing, and it helped him a little bit with his colic (not much, but a little bit).
