Just found out my son does not go back to school until January 9, 2012 after his Christmas break. So that got me thinking about planning a trip to Disney since there would be a week we could stay during value season. Just wondering what is it like crowd wise Jan 2-8, what discounts are generally available and what is the weather like.

May have a few other friend families going also, so I thought about getting together a YES group. What's that like also?

thanks in advance for any responses

We've gone the first week of January three times. The first two times our kids had off school until the Monday after New Years week, like yours. Thing is, if your kids are off that whole week, chances are lots of other kids are as well. We found that out the hard way, as the parks were absolutely packed. Adding to the crowds were the Brits and Brazilians, since they both have extended Christmas holidays. This past January we tried again since most schools resumed the 3rd. The crowds were moderate, not low by any means. This time there seemed to be more Brazilians than anyone else. As to weather, it was bone-chilling freezing this year. The past years we've experienced mild temps and cool evenings.

I've never been then but a CM told me last June that Jan 3rd is the perfect day to start your trip. She said the Christmas decorations are still up and no one is there. Her actual words were, "it's like a ghost town. it's actually kind of creepy how empty it is". If I didn't work for the school system I would definitely go then. I have always want to be there around Christmas time :)

It shouldn't be too bad at the beginning of the week, the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, but remember that the first weekend of January is marathon weekend and the crowds should start increasing around Wednesday or Thursday, the 5th and 6th, of that week for the expo. And all marathons are at 95% capacity or more already. Just a little tidbit. But I'd rather be crowded in The World than anywhere else. :)

We went last year from Jan 2-9 and thought it was great, albeit with record cold. Crowds were reasonable, and we walked on most rides. Going again this year and expect it'll probably be the same. The marathon did not seem to impact attendance at the parks, at least we didn't notice a difference.

There are often great deals.....4/3, pins, 40% off rooms, free dining, or any of the above. We got 40% off room and are actually paying less this year than last year.

We were there on Jan. 3rd this year. That CM was nuts, or else remembers how things USED to be years ago. The crowds were not low by any means. They were moderate, even with the freezing weather.

I also am thinking of doing a trip in Jan 12. My guess is there is no really slow time at Disney anymore but I think it would be nice to be there when it is not 100 degrees! Our last 2 visits have been in June! ;)

We were in DW Jan 2-8 this year. It was cold enough to wear a coat everyday. I only remember 2 nights that I actually got cold. The farther away from the 1st we got the less the crowd. One morning we went to breakfast in Epcot and we had the place to ourselves. It was a magical wonderful trip. Christmas without the crowds.
I got a pin for 45% off on deluxe rooms.
