DETROIT -- The Red Sox and Tigers never took the field on Saturday night, as the game was officially postponed roughly 90 minutes after the scheduled first pitch.
Instead, the sides will play a day-night doubleheader on Sunday, with Game 1 at 1:05 p.m. ET and the nightcap to be played at 7:05 p.m.
While clubs typically don't like to play a doubleheader on getaway day, the alternatives weren't appetizing for either side.
This is the only visit to Detroit for the Red Sox this season.
"Well, we talked about it, what's in everybody's best interest," said manager Terry Francona. "We didn't want to come back Thursday. If they played Thursday, it's like 38 in a row. There was some [talk about] coming back during the All-Star break -- there were some options that weren't real tantalizing. We're here, let's play."
Both teams will keep their pitching in order.
Clay Buchholz will face Andrew Oliver in Game 1.
Josh Beckett and Justin Verlander will match up in a battle of aces in Game 2. Beckett also faced Verlander on May 19, with the Red Sox pulling out a 4-3 victory on a walk-off hit by Carl Crawford.
With 12 wins in its last 14 games, Boston is eager to take the field again. The hope is that the weather will be good enough on Sunday to play two games.
The first game will be on NESN.
Game 2 will not be televised due to Major League Baseball exclusivity rules, which do not allow local television game telecasts for games that start after 5:05 p.m.
