What's on the Menu for Turkey Day?

We are going to the IL's for Thanksgiving. I'm excited for DH because we haven't been to their house for Thanksgiving in several years--they are usually out of town. I hope peace and happiness are on the menu! ;)

We are doing Thanksgiving with my family next weekend--it's always the weekend before. (Does it freak anyone out that next weekend is the weekend before Thanksgiving?? It sure does me!!)

Mom is having:

Turkey
Dressing
Broccoli casserole (YUMMY!!!)
Sweet potato casserole
Hash brown casserole (hopefully. I don't eat sweet potatoes.)
Deviled eggs
Cranberry salad stuff
Pumpkin pie
Pecan pie

I am so looking forward to that--I already have it on my agenda to walk every night this week to "prepare"! :rotfl2:

Thursday evening I am planning a trip to M's with some friends. BAMB, you and MomK want to go?

That's the plan but I need to clear it with her and DH first. Guess dinner will be at 2 again! LOL

Do you want me to come to your house so we can ride in your new sweet wheels?
Did anyone check to see if they are in fact open? And what time.

We don't have Thanksgiving over here, of course, but yesterday we went to DH's mad cousin and she did what she called "early Christmas dinner" and I said to DH on the way home it was our Thanksgiving dinner - becuase I'm thankful that's our duty done for another year:lmao:

:rotfl2: Mazda.

Just ordered our dinner from Cracker Barrel.

Our sides are:

Okra
Green Beans
Pinto Beans
Dumplings
Carrots
and
Fried Apples.

With a gallon of Sweet Tea, all to be picked up at 11am. :thumbsup2

i'll post it when i get home!
the broccoli cheese one.

On Thanksgiving Day I will do a small dinner for those of us at the FD, the local State Trooper and my wife (who works that day too in the ICU at the hospital) We will do a whole "dinner with all the trimmings" on Friday afternoon!

Squid

We used to go to my extended familly (grandparents, aunts or uncles - whoever was hosting that year) for Thanksgiving, but now that DH works all major holidays, we stay home and work around his schedule. Last year was the first year it was just DH, my Dad and I at home, and it was the best Thanksgiving ever! No pressure, no crazy family members - just us and whatever we wanted to make - which doesn't include turkey! I don't even particularly like it, and it's so much work so we have steak tips instead. Haven't decided the sides yet, but it will be eclectic for sure - some traditional things like cranberry sauce and stuffing and some less than traditional things. And no pies for dessert (I hate pie). DH has already requested tiramisu. :thumbsup2

Sure, I'll drive. We can each have a heated seat. Yes, they are open. Diana said the hours this year at 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm

my DSis asked if I can get her a green bean casserole recipe as she fancies doing a few different sides at Christmas - we love the cheesy leeks and the caramelised onions, but *some* of the guests find them (ahem) indigestible;)

We're only doing two Thanksgiving dinners this year, since my older brother, who lives in Central NJ, has staked out the Thursday slot (thereby bumping wife's cousin in Gardiner MA... we'd need an F-16 to actually manage to do both), with my younger brother's in-laws hosting the Friday holiday dinner.

For how many other families has the celebration of the holiday extended to Friday, beyond just shopping and leftovers?

Anyway, it will be a bit interesting. This is our first big holiday meal since we became vegetarians ("for real") in April. Knowing my sister-in-law, I suspect she is going to go over-the-top to be accommodating to us. (Really not necessary. I think if she'd just use vegetable stock instead of chicken stock, and avoid gelatin, in side-dishes she makes, it would be as much accommodation as we really need.) I'm not sure if Friday will work out the same way, but after Thursday, any excuse to eat less on Friday will be welcome. :)

We're not vegetarian, but my friend was a vegetarian for about 15 years (for her it ended the night she had too many beers at a chicken wing restaurant ). Anyway, she came to my parents for Thanksgiving several times and only ate the sides. We made sure to prepare the stuffing with vegetable stock, we didn't mix the utensils during preparation, etc. I didn't think it was a big deal and I'm sure your SIL won't mind it either. I'm thankful she wasn't vegan because I have no idea how to make mashed potatoes without butter and milk! Good luck and have fun!

I have a good one! Let me dig it up.

Hey Bicker! Nice you see you round these parts!!
SIL is a vegetarian too, she just pics at the sides and what not. The only thing with meat in it is the turkey and the gravy so there was plenty for her to have. When we have cook outs we always buy her veggie burgers and cook those first.
No extension here beyond leftovers, unless my birthday falls on that day, then we have cake. This year we may put up a small Christmas tree to enjoy before we leave for Disney.

Jennifer, DH had a boss who was vegan. That was a challenge but I learned a lot when I made Christmas cookies for them. There is a pretty good vegan cookbook that talks about substitutes. The cookies didn't turn out half bad either.
