What's in a title anyway? How about 1300 pictures? 4/15/11-> Bonus Section pt1 & 2

So...according to the tracking number, when should it be there?

You were right - you always are  --- at checkout the estimated Friday, UPS tracking number says Thursday!!!

P.S. Does your "D5000 Student" banner mean you are part of a club? Is it invite only? <nudge, nudge>

That's awesome!!! I want to know when you're opening the box!

No theres no club. I made that banner a while ago and probably will not remove it till I get a new camera because as far as I'm concerned, I'll never stop learning.
There is a thread in the photography section by TheGoofster called"this week I'm working on" which I highly recommend. He started when he was still fresh and new with his d5000. It hasn't been updated in a while but it's a very good read!

it's me... the Mrs.:goodvibes I must say this has to be the BEST trip report I have ever read! ;) Can't wait to go back in May!!

Tina - I have enjoyed reading along with the adventures of you and your family :goodvibes

IT'S HERE!!! I AM IN LOVE!!!

However I think that the 70-210 needs to be returned... it doesn't auto focus and it doesn't really seem to "do much" for a zoom factor... Was I expecting something that I shouldn't have with that lens? Would I be happier with: this guy? Also, am I limited to Nikon lenses or is there another brand you might recommend?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

ETA: I don't want ^that guy^ - I need VR.... right? Like this guy?!

Well, here's the bad news first. I looked at the wrong lens when you asked me before. The one that you have now will not auto focus with the D5000 and here's why. The D5000 does not have the auto focus motor built into the body of the camera so you need it to be built into the lens itself. Check the manual for the camera and it will tell you what kind of lenses will auto focus (it will be determined my a letter assignment on the lens's model #.) The way I usually tell the difference is if it looks like the link you posted for the one without the VR, it doesn't work. Take a look at the two links side by side. The first one is all metal the second one has a plastic body. Short end, metal won't auto focus.

The good news is that B&H should take it back with no problem. I asked them 100 questions before I got the last one from them and even though it was used, they told me to send it back for any reason at all.....even if it wasn't as sharp as I had thought it should be.

They have a link on their page where you can chat with a Tech and ask any and all the questions you want. My first question was "Does this have the focus motor built into the lens?" He replied "Yes." Second question was "Will it auto focus on a D5000?" He replied "Yes" Similar questions went on for another 1/2 hr but he had assured me that they would take it back if I wasn't 100% satisfied.

As for the zoom part. At 200mm it should be about equal to a "point and shoot" camera zoomed in at 10x. At 300mm you would see something similar to a 16x P&S camera zoomed in. Mine goes to 250mm and I love it.

A couple more lens brands I'd look at are Tamron and Sigma. Do a little homework when you pick out a particular lens because some may not be as sharp as others even though they are made by the same company. You could say I'm frugal when it comes to spending money on certain things (remember my meal plan back and forth which I still haven't decided on?) so I want the biggest bang for my buck. I researched that lens I got from B&H for about 3 weeks before I said "let's do it." I hate spending that kind of money but I love the pictures I got out of it.

Here's one from their website that looks like it would be right up your alley

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/622385-USA/Sigma_686306_50_200mm_f_4_5_6_DC_OS.html

The customer reviews seem pretty good overall. I don't remember what you paid for the 70-210 but if I remember correctly, they were about the same price.

Now, here's the question of the day. If the 200mm is right around the zoom capabilities of the typical P&S zoomed in at 10x, is that enough for you?
Remember bigger lenses usually weigh more also. Without the camera, my 18-250 is a pound and a half which doesn't seem like much, but it is heavy.

One more thing.....Sigma lenses turn the opposite direction when zooming in and out. Took a few times to get used to it, but now I'd think Nikon was weird if I went back to one.

Don't get flustered. This is going to be a long and fun road for ya. I still learn new things all the time and I've had it for almost 2 years now with over 20,000 on it pictures already. The best part is, your going to love what you can do with it right now but the more you play with it the more you will see how much better you can be.

Pretty soon we're going to have you shooting RAW files and going nuts with post processing. Than you'll try out HDR and all your friends will be ooohhhing and aaaahhhhing over all your stuff......and you can do all that with the setup you have now :thumbsup2 Don't worry about buying any more lenses for a while until you get used to what you have and know that you've outgrown them or a special need for one arises.
I'm so excited for you!!! :woohoo:

Let me know when you get some pics up somewhere!

One more happy dance for ya!!!!!
:dancer:

Attention TR readers - sorry for this hijack, but I am just so gosh darn excited about my camera and Rob is the only other person I "know" that has the same camera and has more knowledge than me!

Soooo... I think for now I am going to return the "crap" lens and just play with the stock lens. I figure I've got a good 7 months before Disney... so maybe around August I will venture out into the additional lenses. Your personal position of waiting for a second lens? Wait it out, or get it now and learn both lenses? I think I will probably go with the nikon 55-200 (amazon for $195) or 55-300 (amazon for $315) when the time comes.

(What does it mean "International" and "USA" on the Nikon Lenses over on B&H? Other than a jump in $60 for the USA version).

Oh, Oh, Oh - I forgot... There is the big St. Patty's parade tomorrow - outdoor, noonish, curbside - what is my best choice for settings?

As far as I know, all Nikon lenses come from the same assembly line whether it's stamped for USA or international. As far as I can tell the difference is the Nikon warranty but triple check that with B&H first.

With the parade, just have fun for now. I'd try back and forth between auto with flash (The green one) and auto without flash (arrow w/ line through it.) Switch back and forth and check out the results back on your computer. Look at the properties of the pictures and it will tell you what setting the camera picked. Find one you liked and find one you didn't like and compare the two to see what was different.

Did you talk to B& H about the return?

Gotta run for a bit.

Hey,
Just wanted to let you know I printed some of the photos I "hi-jacked" from you and some other "dissers" and the quality is amazing!!

You people that take great photos obviously know what your're doing!!

I had them printed at Costco and they came out great!
I can't wait to start scrap booking now!

I was especially in need of more castle shots and castle shots with
fireworks as well as some of the rides that my photos came out too dark!!

So Thanks again...
and when I get started scrapbooking, I'll take photos of my pages and post them to see if you recognize any of your photos!! :thumbsup2

Let me know if you're looking for anything in particular, I may have some more laying around I'll send ya. I was hoping to have another update tonight but it's not looking good. Possible, but not till late.

Crappy, cold day + long, drawn out parade with too many gaps between "entrants" = a not so happy new D5000 photographer...

I am lucky if I got 10 pictures...

Question.... Sometimes when I went to take the picture I held the button down but it wouldn't take a picture... any thoughts?

Probably didn't have anything to focus correctly on. Try aiming at something with contrast, hold the shutter button down 1/2 way and when it locks in push it all the way in and it should take the picture. :thumbsup2

Just downloaded GIMP - and I am having too much fun with color selection!!!

These are from the parade:

Hi There...stumbled upon your TR this weekend and have enjoyed reading it. You have a beautiful family. Looking forward to the rest of your adventure!!

Well Jennifer, since Rob isn't really keeping up with his TR, this post is for you. The pics of your daughter are so cute! And I love the black and white's with color. What is GIMP? I am a newbie to DSLR also, although I got a Sony because I had a lot of lenses from a 35mm. The weather has been so crappy, I haven't had much chance to play with it, I can't wait for a sunny day!

Rob- Sorry, but you're slacking! Good thing we're faithful.

The pictures of the three boys hugging and laughing is the essence of Disney:wizard:--just how everyone should feel when they are there!
We love riding the People Mover--so relaxing and in the summer it really cools you off! However this last December during one of the coldest days in Orlando history we got "delayed" or "stuck" or whatever you choose to call it for TWENTY minutes overlooking the Raceway cars! The view was wonderful but the wind was WICKED!! We were given Fastpasses to any ride of our choice so that was a nice compensation:thumbsup2--hopefully the weather is nicer when we ride it in a little over 3 weeks!!

:lmao: - I am sure Rob won't mind our side-banter! Thank you - the black & white with selective color can be a bit time consuming, but the outcomes are well worth it! Gimp is like Photoshop - BUT FREE :thumbsup2 (Download Here) They have great tutorials to play around with. My only complaint is sometimes it gets a little "laggy."

Jennifer- I downloaded gimp last night and spent a couple hours trying to figure it out. I finally went to youtube and watched some tutorials. Did you do your B&W with color with the layering? That is the only way I was able to get it to work, just curious if that is the best way. (Again, sorry Rob, but you don't seem to be anywhere in sight...)

Actually, a photo that I'm looking for is the Walt Disney World sign as you first enter the world. You had one that I copied but it's pretty far back.
If you had a closer up view of that, I'd appreciate that. I tried to take a shot myself but we entered on the magic express bus and I didn't get a good shot at all.

Thanks.

Yes, I did the layering approach and it was quite time consuming!

I followed this tutorial: put out by GIMP
