Whats a troll

I've just read on a reply to quite a contravercial thread " I smell a troll" what does that mean.

Actually, on the web it can take on a few different meanings. In the context you're seeing, it usually means someone that is disguising themselves for the sole purpose of starting trouble. They may post a topic that they know will get heated, or try to personally attack a particular user. In either case, we normally end up finding out who the person is and ban their access to the site.
