Whatever happened to shoveling to the pavement (on sidewalks)?

Well I just found out that my city has a snow removal ordinance! I am going to take down that number and keep it handy. It's sad that people are so lazy these days that you have to report them just to get the sidewalks clean..

We have a lot of elderly people on our block that can't get out and shovel..would you turn them in too???

If it's the law, then they have to hire someone, possibly a neighborhood kid to shovel. It's not that big of a deal to find someone to take care of it.

perhaps not where you are, or maybe your elderly are well off there......but even kids around here get 50.00 to shovel the walks and many of our elderly can not afford that...a few snowfalls and they are out a few hundred dollars! If there is snow on the sidewalk we just walk into the street..no big deal....

$50.00!!!!! That's extortion!! Our super does it as part of his salary, so I had no idea that kids were getting that kind of coin these days! I figured that it was like $10 bucks!

If I had an elderly neighbor I'd gladly go ever and shovel their sidewalk for them. Or I'd "suggest" to one of my kids that they go shovel for free.

We have 24 hours to shovel our sidewalks, but not everyone does it that fast. The one house that tends not to do itis at the entrance to our neighborhood, where the elem bus stop is. That's irritating since there are 4 able bodied people in the house that could do it. And if they didn't want to do it they have the means to hire someone.

In my neighborhood I passed out flyers to the eldery and shoveled their sidewalks for $5 an hour. If I knew they were elderly I'd offer to shovel for them for pay or just do it for free if they were too poor. That's what my dad made us do as kids -- we ended up shoveling half the neighborhood!

As far as getting $50 that is just ridiculous. What kind of a kid charges that much and who would pay that??

Probably the parents who think their child shoveling is worth a lot more than it is . I used to rake for this one lady for $5 an hour. Well I was unable to do it once so she hired some other kids. They handed her a bill for $150! :earseek: Never in my life would I charge that and if my parents found out I did that they'd kill me!

See...that's about what I figured! We owned an investment property in WPB, FL and the landscapers charged us $60 a month to take care of everything. They would mow twice a month, weed, plant new foliage, etc. and it took them way longer than the hour it would take a little kid to shovel a driveway and sidewalk. If kids are getting $50 a driveway, I know quite a few grownups who would easily do it for less!!

I'm also in Pennsylvania and we have 24 hours to get our walks shoveled. For the most part, people keep on top of it and go out several times a day to clear the sidewalk so they don't have one huge job at the end. That's the smart way of doing it. Also, we're not allowed to push snow into the street.

Where I live now, we don't have a sidewalk, just a little porch and a slab of concrete leading up to it. I make sure we have a path clean for the mailman, but we don't otherwise shovel much here.

We are on a corner lot! So its twice the amount of sidewalks. We also have an extra wide driveway as well.

I do make a smallish path because I am usually the one who does the shoveling. Yesterday I did driveway, all the sidewalks, the front walk, front and back steps and side door. (although we don't use the side door)

I couldn't do the driveway apron because the construction workers on our street blocked me in with thier vehicles.
